SUNDAY 07/24/2022 CRIME ZONE SOC/262 Déviance Prevention Guide ISSUE #03 Author Latimarze Peters CRIME IN A SOCIOLOGICAL CONTEXT Crime breaks all societal norms. Crime occurs when all of the rules and laws are broken, and punishments are sanctions are then given to the committers of the crime (Macionis, 2019). The community of Hammond Louisiana is plagued with crime. In order to get a better outlook on the crime this community faces, it is good to view the Social Disorganization Theory. According to this theory, crime occurs greatly in communities that lack social control (Macionis, 2019). Hammond have high rates of crime and the sad part is that a great deal of crime in this area is occurring with our youth. Crime rates in this area are at an all- time high amongst the youth in which most of the crime is violent crime. https://sociology.okstate.edu/graduate/specialty-areas/93-pages/381-criminology SUBSTANCE USE ISSUES AND CRIME: Social Disorganization Theory In Hammond, substance use plays a huge role in the crimes that are committed in the area. A fix to this situation would be to incorporate the Social Disorganization Theory. According to statistics, a person’s environment normally plays a role in the person’s decision to commit deviance. When people, are introduced to substance use in their environment then it is normally hard to stray away from the decision to use substance in which due to the lack of funding and jobs in the area, it can lead to criminal acts to obtain the substances, which causes deviance (Macionis, 2019). Sunday 07/24/2022 CRIME ZONE ISSUE #03 CRIME OUTREACH PROGRAMS: SAFE HAVEN CENTER https://hammond.org/ departments/grants/safehaven/ The city and community leaders of Hammond, LA have put together a safe haven center for the residents of Hammond. Here residents can come in and get access to different outreach programs as well as resources to help everyone, especially the youth, when it comes to getting them in programs to prevent them from committing acts of deviance. The center has teamed up with the local job center to help provide jobs for the youth and residents and also a meeting space for local community events. As a result, the history of crime substance use is at an all-time high. The issue is so widely spread that it is filtering over into the youth. Youth do not have jobs to purchase the substances so as a result the end up committing crimes to obtain the substances. When offenders are caught most of them are under the influence of drug and alcohol use. In Hammond, the different type of substances that are common are fentanyl, marijuana, opioids, cocaine, and heroin (Hammond, 2022). Our environment here plays a huge role in crime and substance use so we must all work together to combat this use by getting involved to help create a better community for us all.
