Share the problem you are focusing on in your research. Based on the identified problem, develop and share your research question here. The problem that I am focusing on is the need for social workers in the prison system and the lack of social workers in the corrections that advocate for the inmates and their issues while incarcerated. My research question is What are the benefits of social workers in the correctional system who advocate for inmates and how can advocacy help in lowering the recidivism rates? What would you like to know about this topic; that is, what is a gap in knowledge that your research on the topic could fill? The Gap in Knowledge: Though there are social workers in the prison system, there is a need for social workers who advocate for the inmates to receive the programs needed for reentry back into society. How does this problem relate to practice? When people are sentenced to prison, depending on their criminal history and crime, they are sometimes stipulated and must complete certain programs before parole eligibility and release. Sometimes an inmate could receive a minor infraction while incarcerated and then be denied access to the programs they need in order to be released, even though they have completed the punishment for the infraction. This is why inmates need social workers to advocate on their behalf so that they have a shot at reentering communities and making a positive contribution to society.
