Final Paper Preparatory Assignment This assignment will help you prepare for your final paper and will be completed over the first three weeks of the course. Specifically, this assignment will assist you in researching and analyzing scholarly sources, creating an annotated bibliography, and crafting a preliminary thesis for your week 5 paper. The suggest timeframe for completion for each of the components of this assignment are included below. Much of this work is targeted for completion in Week 3, though you can always work ahead. This assignment is due to your instructor, submitted through Waypoint, by the end of Week 3. After your instructor has graded this assignment, please be sure to use it and the feedback provided to you by your instructor as you construct your final paper. As a reminder, you can also access your feedback through Waypoint directly. 1. Identification of Social Problem & Social Science Disciplines (Week 1): In your week 1 discussion, you selected a social problem to examine for your final paper. Please discuss this social problem and why you selected this topic below. In addition, discuss the two social science disciplines you selected to examine this social problem and why, Which social problem have you chosen to investigate? Why? I have chosen the issue of human trafficking because it is a heinous issue that is very serious and dangerous to our society. Which social science disciplines did you select to aid you in your examination of this social problem? Why? I chose the psychological and sociological perspectives. I picked psychology because I can go into great detail on psychological tactics used by human traffickers and the psychological effects of human trafficking on victims. I can also go into detail about the sociological perspective of human trafficking as to why they do what they do. 2. Identifying & Evaluating Sources (Weeks 2 and 3) Research is heavily dependent upon the identification and evaluation of sources, which is a necessary step prior to the writing process. During weeks 2 and 3 of this course, you will be responsible for identifying and evaluating two scholarly sources from each social science discipline that you have selected. At least one of these sources should be identified and described
by the end of week 2, as discussing this source will be an important part of your Week 2 Research Checkpoint. Remember, scholarly sources are published in scholarly journals, or if books, scholarly presses. The library has a great tutorial on what a scholarly source is and how it is different from a popular source. You may also find the How to Read a Scholarly Article and Evaluating Sources tutorials helpful for this portion of your assignment. In the space provided below, you will provide APA-formatted references and annotations for each source you will be using. An annotation is an examination of your source that: Explains what the source is What this source can tell us about your social problem What research methods were used within the study How this source will help you prove your thesis. Please make sure to be specific, as reflecting upon your sources will help you with your analysis later. Your annotations should be 1-2 paragraphs in length. Here are some examples of annotations . First Social Science Discipline: APA Citation for Source 1: Provide the APA citation for your source. Here are some examples of APA citations. Cecchet , S. J., & Thoburn, J. (2014). The psychological experience of child and adolescent sex trafficking in the United States: Trauma and resilience in survivors. Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy, 6(5), 482-493 Annotation for Source 1: Throughout the study, information is presented about the psychological effects of the sex trade on victims. Using interviews with six survivors of child and adolescent sex trafficking, this study examined factors that affected their ability to survive and recover from sex trafficking. A particular focus is on how the individual's anxious attachments contributed to their vulnerability to recruitment and how their precarious relationships contributed to their increased emotional insecurities. In addition, it describes how their childhood environment desensitized them to the effects of prostitution.
APA Citation for Source 2: Withers, M. (2016). A look at seven common manipulation tactics used by traffickers. Psychological Tactics Used by Human Traffickers Annotation for Source 2: The article discusses the psychological approaches traffickers use to prey on defenseless victims. In many cases, coercion, manipulation, and psychological abuse are more effective than violence. Human traffickers torture and humiliate their victims in order to keep them enslaved and silent. Furthermore, these approaches explain why victims may not attempt to escape despite ample opportunities. Second Social Science Discipline: APA Citation for Source 1: Lerum, K., & Brents, B. G. (2016). Sociological Perspectives on Sex Work and Human Trafficking. Sociological Perspectives, 59(1), 17-26 Annotation for Source 1: The sex industry and policies related to sex work and human trafficking are often disconnected in the US. An assessment of the empirical and scholarly articles on sex work and human trafficking policy in the US is provided in this article. In addition, some sociological articles are available that provide empirical research on the sex trade and the organizations that defend sex workers and help save trafficked victims.

APA Citation for Source 2: Usman, U. M. (2014). Trafficking in women and children as vulnerable groups: talking through theories of international relations. European Scientific Journal, 10(17), 282- 291 Annotation for Source 2: This article focuses on human trafficking through the perspectives of several International Relations theories, but the one I will be focusing on is the conflict and trauma theory 3. Discipline Specific Reflection (Week 3) Next, you will need to reflect upon how each discipline examined the social problem collectively. In a paragraph for each discipline, make connections between the two sources for each discipline. How do the approaches within these sources exemplify the approaches of the discipline itself? Based upon these sources, how does that discipline lend itself to the study of your social problem For example, if you chose Anthropology and History, discuss how the anthropological sources examined the topic from an anthropological point of view, and how, based upon these sources, how anthropology lends itself to the study of the social problem. Then do the same from a historical perspective.
Select your first discipline The two sources I chose for psychology all tire together because they go into detail about the psychological tactics used against victims, as well as the psychological aftermath the victims have to face when they escape the sex trade. I will go into each in further detail in my paper, but both of these sources attempt to enter the brain and way of thinking of both the victims and the traffickers themselves to try and figure out how and why they do what they do. An introduction introduces your topic and approach. A thesis is a sentence length statement of the main idea of your paper. A good introduction and thesis should be informed by the findings of your sources, and your analysis of the ways in which those findings apply to the final paper prompt. For more information about thesis statements, consult the UAGC Writing Center’s Thesis Statement Tutorial and UAGC AEC How To Write a Thesis video . Draft of Introduction and thesis: Human trafficking involves selling, buying, negotiating, and exploiting victims, which violates their human rights. Victims of trafficking suffer both short- and long-term psychological effects. Trafficking victims are controlled by extreme force and various psychological approaches.
Traffickers force victims to become entirely dependent on them by making them adhere to their directions. Usually, victims of forced labor are subjected to harsh working conditions, sexual exploitation, or even organ removal due to coercion and deception. In addition, they are subjected to extreme living conditions and coerced to perform degrading and humiliating acts. Many people do not realize human trafficking is a low-risk, high-reward trade. Mental subjugation is a low-risk method that does not attract any unwanted attention. Identifying and understanding the psychological approaches used by traffickers to prey on defenseless victims and make sure they remain voiceless is pivotal in the fight against human trafficking. From the sociological domain, structural-functional perspectives exhibit how different living environments can create vulnerable individuals and situations that make human trafficking possible. The most common example is that people are always searching for employment to support their families and earn a living. People in unstable political structures and impoverished areas are willing to accept extreme working conditions to have a job or escape poverty. This could result in these victims wandering the streets looking for fast money, and they may be subjected to the heinous world of sex trafficking. The psychological and sociological effects of human trafficking affect both victims and perpetrators.
