OBST 800 S HORT P APER : M ETHODOLOGY A SSIGNMENT I NSTRUCTIONS O VERVIEW The short papers are designed to assess the student’s ability to incorporate various aspects of cognitive environment criticism to the study of an Old Testament book. Understanding comparative methodologies will help shed light on the often complicated relationships of parallels to the biblical text. Elucidating these relationships through methodology will provide for a more coherent approach to sometimes difficult and controversial issues of comparison. I NSTRUCTIONS In the Short Paper: Methodology Assignment you will discuss the nature and significance of biblical parallels and the benefits and challenges posed by incorporating such parallels into interpretation of biblical texts. Step 1: Briefly, explain what pattern or comparative methodology you would follow in assessing the comparability of literature from ancient Near Eastern texts with the texts of Scripture. What Walton and company identify as “Cognitive Environment Criticism” involves successfully integrating background studies—literature, archaeology, history from the ancient Near East—with biblical interpretation of Old Testament passages through the comparative method. This is done in order to determine the level of cultural embeddedness in an OT passage. Step 2: Refer to Sandmel’s article and other articles on the comparative method you access through a library. Apply your methodology by discussing the similarities and dissimilarities between the biblical account of creation (Genesis 1-2) and that of at least two other creation stories. Be sure to mention how evangelical and non-evangelical scholars interpret the importance of these parallels differently. Requirements: The paper must be a minimum of 1,750 words of content in length o This does not include the title page, abstract, or bibliography. The paper must be in current Turabian format. The paper must incorporate at least 6 new scholarly resources Acceptable sources include journal articles or books (you may include resources such as the course textbooks and resources used in previous papers, but you must also include 6 new resources for each short paper).
