Main Question: Explain the ways in which cultural messages influence family help-seeking patterns. Based on the Garcia-Lowe case study, describe how a family’s ethnic identification might impact its multisystem transactions. Finally, explain why understanding dimensions of ethnic identity is important for a social worker engaging with families. Response: Each individual person has their own background and cultural identity and influences their perspective. They bring different experiences and expectations to the conversation, and how they approach the struggles that are of concern. (Toseland and Rivas, 2017 Pg. 161) There are cultural differences in approach of help and thereof with some cultures, for example the Latino community. Cultural messages heavily influence and shape how individuals in certain cultures perceive life events, potential solutions, patterns of family, support systems, appropriate problem-solving strategies and the overall situations that the family faces. (Van Hook, 2019 Pg. 107) The culture that shaped you, and the background of that culture, influences so many of the perceptions due to the resiliency that the community has used for generations. The case study looks at the Garcia-Lowe family, a 23-year-old Caucasian female, who is married to Joseph a 27-year-old Hispanic male, together they have their daughter who is 19 months (about 1 and a half years) old. (Walden University, 2022) Focusing on Joseph and his culture identification of Hispanic, that culture influences the concerns of perspective that were voiced in the case study. Joseph states that he wants his family to stay together, that is the most important, he states that he grew up with the perspective that “family takes care of family”. (Walden University, 2022) Familismo, is a shared understanding among the Latino culture that there is a shared responsibility to care for children, provide emotional and financial support and patriciate in decision making. (Rasheed et. Al, 2010 Pg. 112) Latino community is very highly family focused; due to that they would want to handle this family struggle within their community rather than getting help or outside help, that would “tear” their family a part by removing their daughter. The lack of family helping seeking patterns is apparent in this case, you see the lack of ability to ask for help and be open to the help when necessary. As a social worker, working with families from varying and different cultures from your own, it is important to recognize those differences and be open to learning
the differences to be more beneficial to the clients. Understanding the dimensions of ethnic identity, give background and perspective to how the client culturally views the help and how to best approach the concerns. It gives the social worker the best culture competence to best understand the family, and what needs they have, build trust and move forward in treatment. References: Rasheed, J. M., Rasheed, M.
