TO: John Smith, Director of Community Relations.  FROM: Carlie Fida, Manager of Community Relations.  DATE: 12/11/2023   SUBJECT: COMMUNITY LEADERS MEETING 12/11/2023  Good afternoon Mr. Smith,   As directed, I led a meeting with the community leaders discussing important health bulletins for our ambulatory health center. The meeting went otherwise well but there are some concerns that I would like to address and some recommendations that I would like to relay.   During the meeting there was discussion pertaining to the need for more diversity at our center among the community leaders. They brought to my attention that there are a very diverse group of patients at our health center. There are more than 20 languages spoken by the patients at our practice. They addressed concerns about how we will provide the patients with quality care given the language barriers. When I informed the leaders that we are only equipped to offer materials in English and Spanish it became very tense.    As I took these concerns into account, I understood the uneasiness of the conversation. I have done my own research on the concerns that were addressed. In my research I found that health centers that do not have multilingual capabilities present risks to patients as they are more likely
to not receive good quality care (Ivannovation, 2021). Also, language barriers are extremely discouraging to immigrant patients as they don’t feel they will be understood (Vader, 2023). This leads them to believe they won't receive proper care and in turn are in poor health due to not getting the services that they require (Vader, 2023). I feel that we can make some improvement as this is in the best interests of our patients.   I have some recommendations on how to reach a mutual agreement so that everyone involved can benefit. My first recommendation would be to run a report on the languages spoken by our patients and try to hire staff that speak those languages. This will help with interpretation and will help the patients by providing clear communication. If we can't find interpreters for all languages, I have found a mobile interpreter system called Martti that is HIPAA compliant and is fluent in over 250 languages (Gritman.org, 2020). This will ensure patient needs are met and that there is clarity in communication. I also think it would be beneficial for the patients to receive any medical material whether it be a bill, visit summary or letter in their preferred language as it is beneficial for them to comprehend these matters. If we are to implement the recommendations that are provided, I believe that it will be beneficial for our patient's health, thus also business as this will encourage more patients to come to our practice for diverse services.     Thank you so much for your consideration and the opportunity,   Carlie Fida, Manager of Community Relations
