When a social issue implicates systemic injustices, neglect, or human rights violations that affect individuals or communities, it becomes a concern within social work (Poe, 2019). In the case of hospitals transporting patients without homes to skid row in Los Angeles, this action reveals a social problem rooted in neglect and a failure to adhere to state health codes (Poe, 2019). The hospitals' actions disregard their responsibility to arrange appropriate post- hospital care, violating the dignity and rights of these individuals. This scenario underscores systemic issues within healthcare systems, exposing gaps in policies and guidelines concerning post-hospital care for individuals without homes (Poe, 2019). How can social work practice skills be applied to advocacy and policy that promote change? Social work practice skills are vital in addressing such social problems through advocacy and policy interventions. Social workers possess expertise in advocating for vulnerable populations, challenging systemic injustices, and shaping policies that uphold ethical treatment (NASW, 2021). To tackle this issue, social workers can employ several strategies. They can engage in policy advocacy by collaborating with policymakers and advocacy groups to develop more straightforward guidelines regarding post-hospital care (Jansson, 2018). Additionally, they can support legal actions against hospitals engaging in neglectful practices and provide ethical guidance and training to healthcare professionals on dignified care for vulnerable populations (NASW, 2021). Through community engagement efforts, social workers mobilize affected communities to advocate for changes in hospital practices and policies. By applying their expertise in advocacy, policy analysis, ethical considerations, and community engagement, social workers strive to implement systemic changes that prioritize the dignity and rights of all patients, especially the most vulnerable individuals within society (Jansson, 2018).
