2 Diversity Statement My name is Johnnishia Jackson and I have earned my Bachelors and Masters of art degree in education. I am currently enrolled in a PHD program to receive my doctorate degree in education, and this will be beneficial for me as my educational goal is to become a professor in the future. My main goal is to teach at a local university so that I can teach young adults. I have over five years of teaching experience, and I started off teaching at my local high school that I graduated from which was very exciting to me. I was so excited to have earned two degrees in the past and I will be as excited as I was the first two times when I earned my PHD. In the past I have taught 8th grade Science and in the future I plan on teaching educational courses to help upcoming teachers. If I had to choose something that reflects success in my eyes I would say that earning my past degrees and being able to teach have allowed me to be quite successful as an educator. I feel like completing college was one of the most successful things that I have done thus far, and earning my PHD degree will be the second most successful thing in my life. Success is solely up to you, it requires meeting both short term and long term goals. Diversity, equality, and inclusion is something I have taken on since the beginning of my career. It is imperative to treat all students equally regardless of their upbringing, cultural, ethnicity, or religion. It is easy to treat students and colleagues in a biased way unknowingly. To eliminate a bias approach, I always give the same opportunity to all my students as I give to one. Also, I ensure that I am aware of my students and colleagues feelings as all time therefore, I always ask questions. Lastly, I have a discussion box in my classroom which allows my students to drop notes at the end of the day to discuss any arising issues that they may be struggling with including cultural, religion, and ethnicity.

3 One day I am hoping that the highschool I teach at will be more diverse and culturally accepted. A Lot of things have changed over the years including prayers in schools especially in public schools. Children are not able to be diverse and accepted the way that they are, but the school system wants children to be identified as almost the same. The public school that I teach at is the same school that I once attended therefore, I know first hand. Children are made to wear uniforms to be looked at as equal. In my opinion, we are all different and should have permission to express our differences through our clothing whether that’s with words or pictures. The two groups I have supported along the way that represents under representation would be women and people of color for example”black lives matter”. I always support these two groups because women often are faced with pay issues especially on the job. Women are known to receive less salary than men. Also, when it comes to people of color we are often faced with discrimination and are considerably under-represented which makes life much harder, because the world is not diverse and acceptable. I have supported by campaigning, rallying, and donating to both groups in hopes of making the world equal and a better place. My commitment to enhance equality and diversity is to commit to webinars to bring awareness. Many people are not aware of diversity and what it really means to be culturally acceptable. People sometimes are simply not knowledgeable enough to understand how to interact with other groups of people. In the future I plan to work with schools to host webinars so that students and teachers know how to effectively engage with one another.
