In this discussion, policy advocacy challenge 7.2 on LGBTQ+ homelessness is defined by stakeholders, which include advocacy organizations, social workers, legislators, and the LGBTQ+ community itself. Jansson, B. S. (2018) Human rights, equality, and inclusion are often reflected in this concept. Advocates can stress how critical it is to acknowledge and resolve the particular difficulties LGBTQ+ youth have in finding secure housing. The ideals include a dedication to upholding social justice and addressing prejudice rooted in sexual orientation and gender identity. In the case of LGBTQQ youth, many become homeless due to forced departure from their homes as a result of family rejection of their sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBTQQ youth under the age of 18 are funneled into the foster care system, often to families who are affirming their identities. LGBTQQ homeless face challenges including emotional distress, depression, post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation, drug and alcohol abuse coming out issues, and homophobia. Jansson, B. S. (2018) The social worker Jessica Van works with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth. As a social worker working with LGBTQQ, she identifies both reunification within the child welfare system and through services given to homeless youth. Significantly, national organizations such as the True Colors Fund (www.truecolorsfund.org) were created to expand national and local focus on the needs of and services for YYA who are LGBTQ and are experiencing or at risk for homelessness.(Shelton, J.,2018) Also, to identify YYA ( youth and young adults) who are LGBTQ for referral to appropriate and competent supportive services that will address their unique needs, to ensure that YYA who are transgender and gender expansive are referred to using accurate names and pronouns, and to collect data that can provide a better understanding of the prevalence of homelessness among. (Shelton, J.,2018) While working with youth who are LGBTQQ address prejudice, sexual orientation, and gender identity. According to the NASW code of ethics, social workers must respect the dignity and worth of a person. Social workers advocate for clients' conscientious and autonomous decision-making. Social workers aim to augment clients' ability and potential to modify and attend to their requirements. (Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, n.d.) Social workers know their dual obligation to clients and the wider community. The value is represented as addressing conflicts between the interests of clients and the interests of society as a whole in a socially responsible way that aligns with the values, ethical principles, and ethical standards of their profession. What has been omitted from this definition is that learning about LGBTQQ is still a new concept and is constantly changing due to evolving times. Individuals who identify as LGBTQIA2S+ may encounter significant
disparities in social, emotional, and physical well-being in comparison to their non-LGBTQIA2S+ counterparts. The mental health and health disparities seen in these groups and populations are often linked to significant levels of explicit and implicit prejudice and bias, which occur at both the social and institutional levels.
