Julia Hebert SOCL 3371- Sociology of the Criminal Justice System A Multidisciplinary Criminal Justice System Midterm Essay The Criminal Justice System comprises multiple disciplines and various agencies contributing to the goal of processing and solving criminal cases. The criminal justice system is an umbrella comprised of the three core interworkings of law enforcement, courts, and corrections, providing a safe and just society (Goodwin University, 2020). The primary goal of this essay is to explain the complexity of the multidisciplinary arrangement of the criminal justice system and explore the advantages and disadvantages of this system’s structure. Each program and criminal justice agency must play its vital role in determining priorities, goals, and solutions to process cases and be of service to the needs of the community (Owen et al., 2019). The structure of the criminal justice system is law enforcement, corrections, and courts, and under each of these are branches of more specialized fields. Law enforcement officers investigate crimes, patrol and protect the community, and respond to emergency or crises. Corrections officers monitor and protect inmates and prison staff, maintain order within prisons and jails, and provide services to inmates ready to be reintegrated into society. The courts comprise judges, lawyers, bailiffs, and other professionals to serve justice according to the law and ensure the rights of all individuals going through the court system (Goodwin University, 2020). Owen and co-authors (2019) describe the multidisciplinary approach as intertwining disciplines such as criminal analysis, criminology, emergency management, forensic science, homeland security, law and legal studies, security administration, and victimology, working together to form the umbrella of the criminal justice system. Having specialized fields in the
system allows aspects of the complexities of cases and community concerns addressed by specialized professionals working simultaneously and holistically toward the same case or goal from start to finish with efficiency and accuracy in mind (U.S. Department of Justice, 2022). The multidisciplinary structure of the criminal justice system yields many advantages. The U.S. Department of Justice (2022) states that a successful multidisciplinary team such as the criminal justice system is characterized by these five elements: “shared decision-making, partnership, interdependency, balanced power, and process,” According to the U.S. Department of Justice the multidisciplinary structure is successful because it delegates the responsibility and liability of each case amongst many disciplines and professionals. The tasks are better suited to each department; therefore, the professionals are better equipped to make accurate and well- informed decisions because it is within their expertise (2022). Within the system, experts can rely on each other cross-functionally for assistance and resources in complex cases. The criminal justice system, multidisciplinary in nature, also presents many disadvantages. When the system is cross-functional, it is interactive and works to obtain the same goal, but it is not always successful. There is a barrier and lack of communication with the multiple units (U.S. Department of Justice, 2022). The system should serve to cross-functionally, but with the lack of communication and discrepancies, the disciplines can become siloed. When the system is uncoordinated, it can cause conflicting recommendations as well as redundant and duplications of tasks, making the process inefficient and compromised (U.S. Department of Justice, 2022). The multidisciplinary criminal justice system is essential for the continuation of the interworkings of law enforcement, courts, and corrections to continue to provide safety, protection, and jurisdiction and maintain order in our community. The multidisciplinary nature of
the system presents both advantages, with delegating tasks to the department which is best suited, and disadvantages, with lack of communication cross-functionally. The criminal justice system must maintain effective communication, well-trained professionals, and efficiency in determining how the criminal justice system can best serve the community.
