1. What are the current trends in violent and property crime (compared to those from 10, 20, and thirty years ago) at the city, state, and national level, and what effect do you think the COVID-19 pandemic had on these types of crime in the US? How do you know?” The current trends in violent and property crime in Lafayette, Louisiana, the state of Louisiana, and the United States have significantly fluctuated throughout the years. However, there has been a decline in all three city, states, and nations from 30 years ago. In Lafayette, Louisiana, the crime rate in 2022 was 582, and the crime rate in 1992 was 874. In Louisiana, the crime rate in 2022 was 628.8, and in 1992, the crime rate was 984.6. In the United States, the crime rate in 2022 was 380.7, and the crime rate in 1992 was 757.7. I find it interesting that in Lafayette and Louisiana, the crime rate jumped from 2005 to 2006 when Katrina occurred. When Katrina occurred, it dispersed and relocated many people from the areas affected by the hurricane and the New Orleans area affected by the levees failing to Lafayette and other surrounding cities that were not as affected by the hurricane. This hurricane resulted in people losing everything: homes, jobs, loved ones, cars, belongings, etc. The extreme stress, financial burden, and relocation were all factors in Louisiana's mean total crime rate rise. The crime rates for violent and property crimes increased. However, I specifically found it interesting that the murder rate (7.08 per 100,000 compared to 3.26) increased the most significantly out of the different types of crime. The effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had on these types of crime in the US are similar to when Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005. COVID-19 left many people unemployed in health crises, people lost their loved ones, and many were enraged with the political aspects/issues that COVID-19 brought on. This was a time of emotional and financial turmoil. A lot of the crime that increased during Covid-19 was property crime. This aligns with people being unable to afford what they need and having too much time on their hands. Another aspect of
the rise in crime could be that there was mandated social distancing and quarantining. People had an easier time committing crimes because no one was around to deter the crime from occurring. You will also respond to at least two classmates’ post critiquig their analysis, comparing your location to their location, and/or providing insight into why you believe the differences in crime exist as they do. Submission Guidelines In your post below, you should provide a thoughtful and well- composed response to the prompt. Your response should address all aspects of the prompt, and reflect your understanding of the topic addressed and your ability to support your position on the topic. Following your original response, respond to 2 of your classmates' posts . After you post your initial response, you will be able to see other responses. You are not required to post more than twice, but feel free to respond to other posts and engage with your classmates. Your original post should each be at least 250 words long (one page double-spaced) and your responses should each be about 125 words. A
simple “I agree” or “Yes” or “LOL” will not count. Please think about the questions and your peers' responses and reply thoughtfully and courteously, according to netiquette rules. Use good English grammar, correct punctuation, and complete sentences. While the posts will mostly be judged by their thoughtfulness and completeness, points may be deducted for grammatical errors, especially if they interfere with the clarity of the post. Your initial post and your replies MUST contain a citation to back up the claims you are making. You should use your textbook and valid, reputable outside sources. (Wikipedia is NOT a reputable source.) Reputable sources include peer-reviewed journal articles, the FBI, the Bureau of Justice Statistics, etc. (peer-reviewed journal articles and official data cites are best). News media outlets are not reputable sources alone- look to see where their information is coming from and go directly to that source. If you have a question about whether a source is reputable, you may email me the link. It should be clear what information was collected from your source. In other words, use an internal citation in your post/reply and then put the FULL citation (in ASA format) at the end of your post/reply. Please include a URL when applicable, but a URL alone is not an acceptable citation. Failure to include a citation will results in ZERO points for the post/replies. Grading Rubric Discussion Post (4 points) Discussion post was submitted, answers prompt fully and contains required citations- 4 points Discussion post was submitted but do not answer prompt fully or does not contain proper citations- 2 points Discussion Reply (3 points each) Discussion reply(s) was submitted, answers prompt fully and contains required citations- 3 points Discussion reply(s) was submitted bu does not answer prompt fully or does not contain proper citations- 1 point
