How might social work research inform dialogue on efforts to reform the immigration system? Social workers in the US have always considered immigrant and refugee rights to be extremely important issues. Prominent figures in the sector, like Jane Addams, Edith Abbott, and Grace Abbott, gained their experience working in settlement homes, which functioned as hubs for social services and housing for newly arriving immigrants to the United States (Haidar & Smith, 2017). Simultaneously, humanitarian organizations as well as religious and ethnic groups have long aided in the integration and well-being of refugees and migrants. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) acknowledges that because of immigration laws, immigrants and refugees have particular difficulties. The legal and social statuses of immigrants have an impact on social service delivery and community well-being in the United States, so social workers should take these policies into consideration. Over the past century, there have been numerous changes in legislation and public opinion regarding immigration and refugee concerns in the United States. The NASW acknowledges that conflicting values related to national security, economy, humanitarianism, and human rights influence immigration and refugee policy. Immigration and refugee policy are shaped by the ideas and values that are popular at any particular historical time, which has an impact on people and families both inside and outside of the United States. The transition from the Obama to the Trump administrations has resulted in ramifications that have already limited the prospects for immigrant and refugee livelihoods. Social workers have the authority to take action against unfair laws and to influence public opinion in favor of promoting immigration and refugee justice. Our efforts in forming coalitions across identities and organizing resources through organizations can be guided by social movement strategies. We can act as advocates by bringing together disparate communities around issues of racial justice and migration, pressuring foundations to increase their funding for community organizing projects, and testifying before legislators and government representatives regarding laws that affect immigrants and refugees. The social work profession's commitment to social justice and the needs of the most vulnerable members of society will be furthered and demonstrated by such advocacy initiatives.
