2 504 and IEP A 504 plan provided a student given accommodations for the school. These might include extended time on a test or state testing. The students can have any disability; however, they do have to fall within the 13 disability categories on an IEP. There categories are specific learning disability, speech, autism, other health impaired, intellectual disability, developmental delay, intellectual delay, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments, traumatic brain injury, deaf- blindness. Also, a 504 will focus on how the student is accessing the content. The school districts and states do not receive additional funding for 504 plans. A 504 plan there is no process monitoring or goals create for the students. The students are not placed in resource classes. An IEP must fit one of the IDEA disability eligibility categories. Each student who receives an IEP will have goals to met and process monitoring data. The school is required to the include the parents within all decision making for the student. An IEP provides special designated instruction, not just accommodations. The IDEA/Dept. of Education and states are the overseers when observing an IEP for a student. When something is changed on an IEP for a student an annual meeting must be held. An IEP or 504 plan are free for all parents. However, the plan should meet the child’s needs. Both plans require a disability and evaluations. The evaluation process is different for each student and disability. Also, both plans require parent permission before he or she can be evaluated. They are both able to serve to accommodate needs of the child through education.
