EMPOWERMENT BASED PRACTICE MODEL Empowerment Based practice Model Asha McCallum Bachelor of Social worker, Walden University SOCW-2002-10 Dr. Christina Geiselhart September 17, 2023
EMPOWERMENT BASED PRACTICE MODEL Empowerment Model According to Martinez (2022), the empowerment model is used by social workers to help clients combat oppression and gain control of their lives. This theory recognizes that disempowerment is often caused by oppression experienced by marginalized groups. Social workers can help by focusing on clients' strengths and setting achievable goals, while also providing encouragement and praise. VCU (2023) notes that people may feel helpless for various reasons, but the empowerment theory emphasizes the impact of oppression. The intervention methods in the empowerment model include psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and postmodern approaches, as detailed by Cummings and Sevel (2017). Concept Application Empowerment models could be used on a micro, mezzo, and macro level. A social worker could apply the concept by understanding the individual, group, community, environment, culture, economic status, political, and religious and its impact on their lives. According to Cumming and Sevel (2017), “To understand the complex interactions among individuals and all the components of their environment, social work draws on general systems theory as a framework for understanding people's problems and for intervening in the lives of their clients.” A social worker must work with the individual to help them identify who or what is causing the oppression whether it is a family member, environment, community, etc., and set goals to change the behavior to gain power over the situation to grow and build self-esteem.
EMPOWERMENT BASED PRACTICE MODEL According to Cunning and Sevel (2017), “System dysfunction is understood as functioning that limits or deters individuals from reaching innate potentials.” Personal Power The empowerment model could help build a client build confidence to build his or her needs. Through proper interventions a client could identify their goals, and they can use personal power to utilize resources to meet their needs. Helping a client to achieve personal power gives the client a sense of self-worth.  As quoted by Cumming and Sevel (2017), “Client strengths become the resources for change that move them forward to growth, mastery, and self- actualization (Miley et al., 2013).”
