Module Seven Question 1 Approach the clips you have seen from a social scientific perspective. What aspects of art therapy would interest a professional in each of the following fields? Psychology :A psychologist would be interested in art therapy due to its unique ability to facilitate self-expression, emotional healing, and personal growth in clients who may struggle with traditional verbal communication. Art therapy offers a non-threatening and creative outlet for individuals to explore their subconscious thoughts and emotions, helping psychologists gain insights into their clients' mental states and inner experiences. Additionally, the process of creating art can promote relaxation, stress reduction, and an enhanced sense of well-being, all of which contribute to improved mental health. Sociology :A sociologist may be interested in how art therapy can be used to address social issues such as inequality, discrimination, and trauma. They may also be interested in how art therapy can be used in community settings to promote social integration and cohesion. Finally, a sociologist may be interested in the broader cultural and historical context of art therapy, including its relationship to other forms of therapy and its evolution over time. Anthropology :An anthropologist may be interested in how art therapy reflects and shapes cultural beliefs, values, and practices. They may also be interested in how art therapy is used in different cultural contexts, including traditional healing practices and contemporary mental health care. Finally, an anthropologist may be interested in the role of art in human evolution and the development of symbolic communication. Module Seven Question 2 Use the social science perspective to propose a few explanations as to why you might find graffiti in a society. Choose a social science principle (norms, roles, institutions, and beliefs and values) and describe how these might influence the appearance of graffiti in a society. Describe how the appearance of graffiti in a society might influence the people living there. From a social science perspective, graffiti can be seen as a form of expression that is influenced by societal norms, beliefs, and values. For instance, in societies where there is a strong value placed on individualism and self-expression, graffiti may be more prevalent as a means of asserting one's identity. Similarly, in societies where there is a sense of social injustice or marginalization, graffiti may be used as a form of protest or resistance. In terms of institutions, the appearance of graffiti may reflect a breakdown of social control mechanisms, such as law enforcement or community policing. In societies where these institutions are weak or ineffective, graffiti may be more common as a means of marking
territory or asserting control. The presence of graffiti in a society may have a range of effects on its residents. Some people may view it as a form of art or self-expression, while others may see it as a sign of disorder or disrespect. In some cases, graffiti may become a symbol of a particular neighborhood or community, either positively or negatively. Overall, the appearance of graffiti in a society can be seen as both a reflection of and a contributor to the social norms, beliefs, and values that shape that society. Module Seven Question 3 Channel your thought process before taking this course and before adopting a social science perspective. Through what type of lens would you have viewed graffiti before taking this course? How would this have influenced how you thought about graffiti? How do these two reactions compare? Has your understanding of social science principles changed the way you perceive graffiti in society? If so, how? If your perspective on a different issue (other than graffiti) has changed after adopting the social science perspective, feel free to write about this issue instead! The social science perspective has broadened my understanding of graffiti by highlighting the societal factors that may contribute to its appearance. It has helped me see graffiti as a complex phenomenon that reflects and influences cultural norms, beliefs, and values, rather than simply as an act of vandalism. Comparing the different reactions to graffiti has also helped me appreciate the diversity of perspectives on this issue and the importance of understanding the social context in which it occurs. Overall, the social science perspective has deepened my appreciation for the complexity of human behavior and the need for interdisciplinary approaches to understanding social phenomena like graffiti.
