Taylor McCrea 1. Describe the differences between 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd world countries. Also, give an example of each. a. The division of all our countries leads back to the Cold War. First World countries contain the United States and its Cold War allies, Second World countries contain the Soviet Union and its Cold War allies, and the Third World simply contains everyone else leftover. First World countries are fully industrialized; an example would be Canada. Third World countries have little to no industrialization and are often considered poor or underdeveloped countries. Niger would be considered a Third World country. Second World countries are the in between countries. These countries are often coined as “developing” by sociologists. An example would be Bulgaria. 2. The use of technology and war go hand in hand. What’s one way that technology has made the lives of soldiers safer - emotionally and physically? a. The Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine developed a kind of wearable sensor in 2019 that is supposed to do various things such as track heart rates and core and skin temperatures. The wearable sensor is intended to help create a performance strategy and determine how the body responds when healthy and when put under stress. This helps to prepare for future battlefield environments that puts a tax on the body. The Army is doubling down on the health of their soldiers and using the wearable sensor will prepare and better the soldier’s health which promotes both physical and emotional health. Smartphones also play a major role in soldier safety. Smartphones are used to connect the previously mentioned wearable sensor to track data. Soldiers can communicate with their families and friends with smartphones, encouraging better emotional and mental health by interacting with people they love. 3. After reviewing a minimum of three videos, please state and highlight the affects and/or importance of its connection to the international defense system and how the U.S. responds to these issues. a. Nuclear Deterrence – Nuclear deterrence is important even in a post-Cold War world. Countries can design security and defense strategies using it. Nuclear deterrence is widely used among countries of similar capability and while it is effective, it also poses a risk for low-intensity quarrels. b. US Spending on National Defense – National defense is directly related to the international defense system as the US primarily uses its militia in its defense and security strategies. I think the US responds to its spending costs on military by using its military for other things other than war. For example, assisting with natural disasters. c. Why Does America Love its Military So Much? – In addition to the military spending costs, many Americans are more willing to put their tax dollars toward military spending to help protect their country and its interests. I personally believe it is a thing of history – the Cold War pushed that military was incredibly important, there is no stigma on being a soldier and it is considered a career in
America, and World War II had a major impact on the American ideology which was how strong our country was to fight in a war, come out of the Great Depression, and become one of the most powerful nations on Earth.
