Module Seven Question 1 Approach the clips you have seen from a social scientific perspective. What aspects of art therapy would interest a professional in each of the following fields? Psychology : I would expect a psychologist to approach art therapy from the painting and drawing aspect. I think a psychologist would be interested to see what each person draws because the psychologist would then relate the drawing back to the persons original complaint upon seeing the psychologists. I also think that examining what a person draws can show a window into their mind. Sociology : I think a sociologist would be interested in group art therapy sessions. While I don't think a singular method of art would interest them more than the other, I think group or community sessions would greatly interest a sociologist. The sociologist could see how the community interacted with each other. They could examine how the young and old treat each other and how each drawing differs from the next. I think group art therapy would be a hit with sociologists. Anthropology : I think an anthropologist would be most interested in comparing the art therapy creations between societies. I think an anthropologist would enjoy comparing paintings in the United States to paintings from China to see how they are both similar and different. I also think an anthropologist would just be interested in the differences between sessions of art therapy. For example, perhaps the art therapy in the United States might be painting while the art therapy in Saudi Arabia may be crafting handmade dolls. Module Seven Question 2 Use the social science perspective to propose a few explanations as to why you might find graffiti in a society. Choose a social science principle (norms, roles, institutions, and beliefs and values) and describe how these might influence the appearance of graffiti in a society. Describe how the appearance of graffiti in a society might influence the people living there. Firstly, I am choosing to look from a psychologist's perspective to see graffiti as an act of rebellion. Most everybody know graffiti is illegal an unlike robbing a bank or using drugs, graffiti provides no instant gratification. Perhaps those doing graffiti are acting out due to past traumas in their home lives. From a sociologists perspective, graffiti can be seen as a representation of society. For example, if you drive through Kansas City, you will see multiple forms of graffiti depicting the Chiefs or depicting Arrowhead Stadium. Graffiti can be seen as a society depicting itself and representing itself.
I am choosing the social science principle of social roles. Everybody has their own social role and how they are believed to act. The millionaire acts stuffy and stuck up while the blue collar worker works hard during the day to make an honest living. I believe social roles can impact the appearance of graffiti in a society. For example, the man you see that is wearing sagging pants with a gold chain. You may expect him to graffiti the logo of a rapper or graffiti things about sex, drugs, and money. He knows that is expected of him and graffiti's these things because he is held under the belief of social roles. The appearance of graffiti in a society can definitely influence those living in the society. As stated above, Kansas City has many graffitied images of the Chiefs players on buildings. This may influence a new person in the society to become a Chiefs fan. A graffiti project showcasing a rap artist may influence a passerby to look at this rap artist and become a new fan of rap. Graffiti can influence society in a myriad of ways. Module Seven Question 3 Channel your thought process before taking this course and before adopting a social science perspective. Through what type of lens would you have viewed graffiti before taking this course? How would this have influenced how you thought about graffiti? How do these two reactions compare? Has your understanding of social science principles changed the way you perceive graffiti in society? If so, how? If your perspective on a different issue (other than graffiti) has changed after adopting the social science perspective, feel free to write about this issue instead! Before taking this course, I generally viewed graffiti as entertaining art. When I got stopped by a train crossing the tracks, I would be entertained by looking at all the graffiti on the train cars as they passed me. I never viewed graffiti as an eye sore; I viewed it as pretty entertainment. My favorite graffiti were always the bright detailed paintings. Taking this class really hasn't influenced my perspective on graffiti at all. I still think it is a beautiful piece of art. Some of them make me laugh. There used to be a spray painted phrase outside of my old place of work and I would always look at it and laugh. The phrase wasn't really useful or uplifting in any way but I always loved it. The phrase was just the words "taco sauce" in neon red paint. It has since been painted over. But, that simple piece of graffiti always put a smile on my face and I will never forget about it. I always pointed it out to my family as we drove by. I still do and will always think of graffiti as a beautiful and entertaining thing to look at.
