The first question that I chose to respond to from the readings is from “Where are the Mothers?” by Katherine Goldstein and is question number three. In the reading, the author discusses a four-point plan to help men and women manage work and parenthood. “What follows is a four-point plan for helping women-and men-with young families better manage work and parenthood” (Shaw and Lee 420). The four-point plan is giving paid maternity leave, giving fathers and non-birth partners paid family leave, prioritizing work-life balance for everyone, and creating official work-from-home and flex policies. Paid maternity leave is important because it helps increase gender equality in the home and in the hiring processes. Giving fathers and non-birth partners paid family leave is important because it impacts how involved the non-birth partner or father is in the child’s life and childcare. Prioritizing work-life balance for everyone is important because it helps people feel included in the workplace and helps them feel accepted as well as included. Creating an official work-from-home and flex policies is important because it helps reduce stress of commuting, save money on childcare, and improve productivity. Another question that I chose to respond to from the readings is from “Immigration Policies Are Harming American Children” by Leila Schochet and is question number one. The Deferral Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a policy that allows certain individuals who meet program requirements to get requested a grant of deferred action. “It allows individuals to get a work permit and a temporary reprieve from deportation” (Shaw and Lee 433). The reason why I think the Obama Administration introduced this policy in 2012 was to give children a chance instead of being deported back. Many of these children are escaping their countries due to bad circumstances that are taking place and are trying to get a better life in the United States. I believe Obama wanted to give these children a chance, and when the DREAM Act legislation
failed to pass, this is why he initiated this immigration policy. According to Schochet, what has been the impact of President Trump’s anti-immigration agenda is fear and anxiety among children. “The fear and anxiety that children are feeling because of President Trump’s immigration policies will not fade when a new administration takes over; the experiences that this generation of children has now will continue to affect them for the rest of their lives” (Shaw and Lee 436). The administrations must look at all the effects of deporting individuals. The third question that I chose to respond to from the readings is from “Beyond the Wall” by Ashley McKinless and is question number two. What the deportation process entails is the arrest, the expedited removal, the notice to appear, the voluntary departure, the bond hearing, and then the deportation. The arrest takes place first, and then an expedited removal process can begin if they are caught within the United States. If an individual does not go through the expedited removal process, the tradition process begins with a notice to appear. Some individuals can volunteer to leave on their own under guidelines. Others appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge for a bond hearing where a dollar amount is set. Then the ruling is made, and many are deported back to their countries. The difference between a migrant and a refugee is a migrant is someone who chooses to move, and a refugee is someone that has been forced to move from their home. “Political debate has centered on whether these families and children should be considered economic migrants, who are subject to deportation, or refugees, who can claim a legitimate right to asylum” (Shaw and Lee 453). Migrants move to improve their lives and refugees move as a result of catastrophic events in their homeland countries. The fourth question I chose to respond to is from the making connections sections and is question number one. My relationship to Islam is that I have a friend who is part Islamic. I am not a Muslim but the kinds of stereotypes about Muslims that are familiar to me are they are
called dot heads, and people say they will bomb the United States. The consequences of such stereotypes in our current culture are that people tend to avoid and stay away from Muslims. They tend to outcast them in social settings. Due to these stereotypes, Muslim people are not even given a chance and these stereotypes can give them low self esteem about themselves. I think more needs to be done to help these stereotypes dissipate.
