Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? I have had my share of both healthy and unhealthy habits. A particular poor habit was the consumption of alcohol. The culture of South Louisiana and the environment of enabling alcoholism at a young age definitely played a part in that portion of my life. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? Women are largely responsible for organizing family events and gatherings, a responsibility that is taken very seriously. Families are often large and live within close vicinity of one another, offering a strong sense of social support. This would be considered a societal role within Okinawa's culture. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. There are no secrets among Ikarians; everyone knows everyone's business. Neighbors take a communal role in disciplining one another's children. The fear of public shame of wrongdoing keeps many of the youth (and the adults, too) in line. This same communal attitude allows the people to enjoy one another's company. Neighbors share wine together frequently. Married couples also report healthy relationships (including healthy sexual relationships) long into their golden years (Anthony, 2013). Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life.
As a business professional, I already find myself in multiple social norms daily. The corporate food chain is pretty much the same fish just different water. I am expected to keep a smile on for my clients, even if they're completely wrong, and they tell me how to do my job. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. The biggest three factors that shape me daily are as follows, in no particular order; daily workload, regulating my emotions, and being with my wife. Now while these seem simple, these factors play sometimes a vital and detrimental part in my daily routine, drastically changing my mood. Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war. One social science issue related to war is the impact of warfare on the mental and physical health of individuals and communities. Another issue is the social and political upheaval that often accompanies and follows armed conflict, including displacement, refugee crises, and the breakdown of social institutions. Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education. One social science issue related to education is the impact of socioeconomic status on access to and quality of education, including disparities in funding, resources, and opportunities. Another issue is the role of education in shaping individual and societal values, beliefs, and attitudes, including issues of diversity, equity, and social justice. Module One Question 8
Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course? Family, Religion, Government, Evonomy, and Education Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. Within India’s caste system the following institutions were listed within the article; government, education, economy, and family. Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India. In India, factors that have influenced the family as a social institution include traditional cultural values and beliefs, economic conditions, and changing gender roles and family structures. These factors have shaped the roles and expectations of family members, as well as patterns of marriage, child-rearing, and intergenerational relationships. Module One Question 11 Use the reading about social institutions in India to identify two social science issues that could be researched further. While religion wasn’t mentioned, one social science issue that could have been touched upon was the blend of religious to create the caste system they utilize. The other is the loss of extended family interaction, in a culture whose pillars are family oriented. Module One Question 12 Describe two social norms in Dubai noted in the reading and explain how these social norms may differ from those of the culture that you grew up in.

One of the societal norm differences between the city of Dubai and my cultural environment is the act of drinking. Drinking, dancing, and "having a good time" are extremely normalized here in Louisiana. Another difference would be the topic of prayer throughout the workday. It would be exhilarating to see shop owners stopping here in the West for prayer. Module One Question 13 What factors shape the social norms in Dubai? Name at least two, and describe how they shape the social norms. Religion plays a large factor in the social norms within Dubai. Religion encompasses every one of the norms listed in the article, it determines everything for Muslim people. The second factor that would shape societal norms would be greed. Dubai is the richest country in the world per capita, making God most important to some, and money to the remainder. Module One Question 14 What factors influence your society's social norms? Name at least two social norms that exist in your culture, and describe the factors that influence them. Two social norms that exist in southern Louisiana culture are the emphasis on family and community and the celebration of food and music. These norms are influenced by the region's history, which includes a mix of French, Spanish, African, and Native American cultures, as well as its geography, which includes the Mississippi River Delta and the Gulf of Mexico. The emphasis on family and community can be traced to the importance of kinship ties and mutual support in the face of environmental challenges such as hurricanes and floods. The celebration of food and music reflects the region's unique culinary traditions and vibrant musical heritage, which have been shaped by the diverse cultural influences of the area. Module One Question 15 Based on the reading about Dubai, identify two social science issues that could be researched further. With how much construction is being done within Dubai, the geology of the island could be researched further. With most materials being imported, with the terraforming, the anthropological side of this discussion would be interesting!

Understanding the anthropological impact of social media is important for comprehending the ways in which technology is integrated into cultural practices and meanings. Module One Question 19
Who occupies the social role of spiritual leader in most Papua New Guinean kinship groups? There isn’t a traditional “leader”, in the sense of the word. All adults are responsible to tend to their own spiritual practices. Module One Question 20 What are the societal expectations for a woman's social role in Papua New Guinea? What influences these expectations? Unfortunately there has not been the progress for the women’s rights movement in Papua New Guinea like in America. Women are still considered mothers, daughters, or elders. There has been more awareness in recent events. Module One Question 21 Within your own society, what social roles do you occupy? What other social roles could you occupy, if you chose to? How much choice does your society give you to occupy different social roles? How much flexibility do you have to fill that social role differently than society expects? I definitely play the role of a voice of reason in my little world. I am sought after for information by work professionals, our coach for our divisional paintball team, or my wife. I’ve always felt the need to learn something everyday, so the role I feel I have is the sage, I suppose.
