Report
1 Journal Module Three Caitlin Fenton Southern New Hampshire University Soc-326-Q7438: Sociology of Deviant Behavior Dr. O’Connor De Los Rios 3/24/24 Media glamorizes violence by producing advertising images that portray violence in an appealing light, normalizing violence and the aftermath of violent acts. Advertising is something we see all around us, at every moment of the day. It is so common that we often don’t recognize what we’re seeing and often don’t think to question the images that we see (Stankiewicz et. Al. 2008). The victimization of women that we see in advertising images produce attitudes that women are not valuable except to exist as sexual objects for male pleasure, that violence is something that should be viewed as desirable, and that victims ultimately wanted to be assaulted (Stankiewicz et. Al., 2008). These subliminal messages that are sent from the constant onslaught of suggestive advertising campaigns impact our culture by normalizing violent sexual behavior and the
2 objectification of women. It blurs the line between what is seen as assault and what is considered erotic or normal in mainstream culture. Resources: Stankiewicz, J. M., & Rosselli, F. (2008). Women as sex objects and victims in print advertisements. Sex Roles , 58 (7–8), 579–589. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11199-007-9359-1
