1 Assisted Suicide is a Medical Intervention Caitlin Fenton Southern New Hampshire University SOC-326-Q7438: Sociology of Deviant Behavior Divinity OConnor De Los Rios 3/17/24
2 The thought of assisted suicide is problematic for most. However, assisted suicide should be a right for terminally ill people with no hope of comfort or recovery. The reclassification of medically assisted suicide as a non-deviant act is a necessary societal progression that protects the rights of individuals who suffer from incurable and intolerable health conditions that adversely affect quality of life. Suicide is something that people avoid talking about or acknowledging because it invokes a feeling of discomfort and fear. I chose this topic because it is an idea that I have come across before and feel strongly about. I have personally seen family members suffer through unimaginable pain and loss of quality of life. Although these family members would not have taken the route of medically assisted suicide, I became interested in the topic and have since found that I agree with the idea of reclassifying it as a non-deviant medical option. Currently, 11 states in the United States allow end-of-life options such as medically assisted suicide ( States Where Medical Aid in Dying Is Authorized , n.d.). Death with dignity laws are in place in these states that allow consenting adults to choose to terminate their lives if certain conditions are met ( Assisted Suicide States 2024 , n.d.). These states allow patients the freedom to take full control of their medical care, including the way they wish to pass away. Although medically assisted suicide is a taboo subject for most people and is cited as fundamentally wrong in most religions, assisted suicide could be the most humane treatment for some conditions, especially those that are terminal or extremely painful. Conditions that have no hope of relief or treatment, as well as conditions that limit the quality of life to that of an intolerable level should be considered for more inclusive end-of-life care options.
