Alyssa Taylor-Sharma PBHL-109 Due: March 24, 2024 Problem Assignment The subtopic surrounding gun violence that I chose is mass shootings. As long as I can remember mass shootings have been a part of our society and seem to happen more and more often as time goes on. I believe they are a huge problem in the United States and it is beyond time for action to be taken. There has not been a single definition of “mass shooting” accepted. However, most sources will define it as 3-4 people fatally injured during the event. The details involved vary by organization. The number of morbidities and mortalities vary depending on which organizations definition is being used to define a mass shooting. According to the Gun Violence Archive a mass shooting is defined as “four people fatally or nonfatally injured (excluding shooter)”. The location of the shooting as well as the motivation of the shooter can be anywhere or any motivation. That being said, the Gun Violence Archive reported 418 mass shootings and 465 fatalities in 2019 (Smart, Schell, 2021, p. 3). Between 2013 and 2019 Indiana had 55 mass shootings resulting in 50 deaths and 214 injuries (GVPEDIA, 2020). Though there were only 55 mass shootings in Indiana over a 6 year period of time, research shows that states with stricter gun laws have fewer mass shootings than those with weak gun laws. The GVPedia ranks these states and their laws with letter grades. A’s have the strictest laws while F’s have the weakest. Indiana was given the grade of a “D-“ (GVPedia, 2020). From the years 2000 to 2013 “active shooter incidents” increased by 16% (Smart, Schell, 2021, p. 10). A mass shooting event is reported to happen one time for every 14 million people (Smart, Schell, 2021, p. 12). The Gun Violence Archive has reported that so far in 2024 there have been 83 mass shootings. Whenever a mass

The amount of legislation passed often depends which political party is in power during that particular year (Luca et al, 2020, p. 5). Research has showed that the more people that are killed in a mass shooting the more media coverage there will be on it (Luca et al, 2020, p. 8). Besides the effects within our government and media, mass shootings affect the way citizens look at their everyday experiences. Children prepare with drills on what to do if there is a shooter in their building. We are becoming desensitized to the tragedies that take place. The people most affected by these tragedies are the victims of the shooters. Their lives are either cut short or forever changed. Studies have shown that 98% of mass public shooters are men and that 61% of those men are white. 82% are younger than 45 (Smart, Schell, 2021, p. 16). Mental illness is often the “reason” given for the shootings though only 15-17% of mass shooters have a diagnosed mental illness (Smart, Schell, 2021, p. 16). A lot of research has been done on who is doing the shootings however, there is no sure way to determine who is more likely to become a victim.
