Reflection 7 JUST2080 470 Identify and describe the primary goals of the Youth Justice Act The primary goals of the YCJA are: Firstly, to rehabilitate and reintegrate young offenders back into society. I believe this goal addresses underlying issues that may contribute to the offender's behaviour. I believe this goal aims to promote the young offender's positive development and foster growth within the offender. Secondly, to prevent further crime. I believe this is done by addressing further risk factors and providing interventions to deter young offenders from engaging in more criminal activities. I believe this involves education, community support, and intervention models in the young offender's life. Thirdly, accountability. I believe the YCJA recognizes the importance of holding young offenders accountable for their actions. While the YCJA does focus much of its attention on rehabilitation and reintegration, it also involves consequences such as community service, apology letters, and programs that try to repair any harm or damage the young offender has caused to the community. Lastly, protection of the public. This goal also coincides with the second goal (preventing further crime) as it aims to protect the public by preventing the young offender from committing more crimes that threaten the community/general public. This goal is also shared with the goal to balance the needs of the young offenders while ensuring their community's safety. Discuss the prevalence of cross-over youth. Cross-over youth refers to young individuals involved in both the justice and child welfare systems. It refers to young individuals who experienced neglect, poverty, or other forms of hardship that may have led them to partake in criminal activities and become involved in the justice system. The prevalence of cross-over youth can be attributed to adverse childhood experiences such as abuse, neglect, poverty, substance abuse, or exposure to violence at a young age. It can also be attributed to trauma and mental health issues, which can impact the young person's behaviour and decision-making. Lastly, it can also be attributed to risk factors like housing issues, family dysfunction, child abuse, or substance abuse. What strategies would you implement to improve the outcomes for high-risk youth? I would implement strategies such as early intervention and prevention programs such as mentorship, therapy, and after-school programs to create a safe and supportive space for the young individual. Creating a safe and supportive space will hopefully promote healing and resilience within the young offender and encourage him/her to change their behaviour/attitude. I would also implement family support by involving the youth’s family to help the parents get the
resources and support they need to help their child stay out of the justice system and avoid high-risk behaviour. Finally, I would provide educational support to help the youth get the resources they need to achieve academically if they wish to do so. This would also help them develop the skills they need to achieve employment or higher education in the future if they wish to do so. I would implement this by providing educational support such as tutoring, job training, and Co-op/apprenticeship programs.
