Reflection 4 JUST2080 Does correctional treatment work? I believe that the effectiveness of correctional treatment definitely has the ability to work, but depends on numerous factors from each individual. Each individual has their own nuanced experiences that influence factors such as the nature of the offence, the individual's willingness to participate, and the quality of the corrections' programs. All these factors can shape how effective correctional treatment is. Some individuals can benefit significantly from rehabilitation programs. However, the example provided describes a scenario where treatment is not so successful because the individual does not want to engage in interventions. Should inmates have the right to refuse participation in correctional programs? I believe that individuals who are incarcerated deserve their rights as much as someone who is not incarcerated does. I think there is a challenge when balancing individuals’ rights with the correction responsibility to protect the greater good of society and attempt to rehabilitate offenders. I think that while it is important for all individuals to have rights, I do not think that refusal of correctional programs should be one of those rights while incarcerated. Refusing rehabilitation programs has the risk of delaying or completely abandoning the chances of positive change within an offender. It can impact the offender's reintegration into society in a negative way. I believe that for true justice to happen, offenders need to change and regret the actions that put them in prison, and I think that begins with correctional treatment programs. Why? Why not? As stated previously, offenders’ rights need to be balanced with the protection of public safety, especially in scenarios like the one stated in this reflection. In cases like this one, where an offender has a high reoffending risk, the correctional system should explore other ways or possibilities to address the reasons for the individual’s refusal and should find other ways to approach this situation to encourage the offender to participate in rehabilitation programs. How might you, as a correctional staff, constructively encourage the offender to participate in correctional programming that will be of benefit to the offender? I think the first step in encouraging the offender to participate in correctional programming would be to understand the reasons why the offender is choosing to refuse correctional treatment in the first place. From there, I would adjust my approach to be able to communicate with the offender, establish an open sense of communication to build trust and rapport with them and provide the individual with information on the benefits of rehabilitation to try to get them to agree to it. I would explain how rehabilitation would benefit them and how much of a positive change it would make to their life if they just tried it.
