1 Writing Assignment 2 Corey Lemieux Health Sciences (Pre-Nursing), South College SOC1861_ONL9A_ONL9_23: Introduction to Sociology Professor Candace Morris November 11, 2023
2 Writing Assignment 2 The sociological concept of culture is relevant to the stigma surrounding addiction because culture shapes our perceptions and attitudes towards different behaviors and conditions, including addiction. In cultures where addiction is heavily stigmatized, individuals struggling with addiction may face significant social barriers and discrimination. In relation to socialization, the stigma surrounding addiction can be seen as a product of societal norms and expectations. Individuals are socialized to view addiction in a negative light, often associating it with moral failings or weakness, which contributes to the stigma. (Conerly et al., 2021) Society and social interaction play a significant role in perpetuating the stigma surrounding addiction. Society often marginalizes individuals struggling with addiction, and these negative social interactions can reinforce the stigma and make recovery more difficult. The sociological concept of deviance is related to the stigma surrounding addiction as those struggling with addiction are often seen as deviating from societal norms. This perception can contribute to their marginalization and the stigma they face. (Conerly et al., 2021)
