FAS 370 – Topic & Policy Proposal Name: Taylor Spradlin 1. What type of diverse family identity do you choose for your Family Diversity & Public Policy project? (1 sentence) The type of diverse family identity I choose for my Family Diversity and Public Policy project examines the unique dynamics of mixed-race families. 2. Why did you choose this type of family? Explain how your topic relates to course content and your interest. (1 paragraph) I chose this type of family topic due to myself and my boyfriend being of two different races. I am white while he is Hispanic and so I chose this topic to gain more knowledge about what kinds of stereotypes and misconceptions these families are facing to help prepare myself for my future and see what I can do for families facing aby type of criticism now. Gaining knowledge about this topic now would also allow me to better prepare my future children as to what they should expect in their lives when having two parents of two different ethnicities as neither my boyfriend nor I experienced a mixed family growing up (my parents are both white while his are both Hispanic).
3. What specific policy (law, procedure, standard, etc.) that directly impacts families do you choose for your Family Diversity & Public Policy project? (1-2 sentences) The policy I chose is The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). 4. What is the background of this policy? Explain how this policy might be experienced uniquely by diverse families. (1 paragraph) The Family and Medical Leave Act which allows eligible workers with up to 12 weeks of leave to care for a newborn, a newly adopted child, or a sick family member. However, unpaid leave doesn’t fully meet the needs of many working families due to families being forced to choose between being with their new baby or sick relative and putting food on the table and paying bills. Low-income and racial/ethnic minority employees are more likely to be ineligible for FMLA because of the types of jobs they have or the employers they work for. 5. What format do you plan to use for your final project? (1 sentence) For my final project I plan to do a PowerPoint presentation to present my research.
