2 Gender Pronouns Overview Gender is a vital and personal facet of an individual’s self-concept, although it is sometimes disregarded or undervalued in many settings, particularly schools. While gender issues and LGBTQ+ identities have gained prominence in recent years, many administrators and educators have not had the chance to learn about respecting others’ preferred pronouns and identities. Many students who identify as transgender or nonbinary have felt uncomfortable or unsafe in their school setting due to this lack of knowledge(Wertheimer, 2021). Alia, the president of a Gender and Sexuality Alliance group at a Massachusetts high school, is advocating for teachers to include an additional area on “get to know you” forms allowing students to declare their preferred pronouns(Wertheimer, 2021). This is critical in ensuring students feel safe and valued in their educational setting. Challenge/Opportunity Despite the growing understanding of gender identity issues, several people have strongly resisted the concept. Creativity and perseverance are needed to overcome the difficulty of persuading the country to accept and recognize preferred pronouns. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of prejudice and misinformation directed toward these communities. Schools and organizations have the chance to make a place that is welcoming and safe for these pupils and other LGBTQ people. It is important to urge instructors to permit pupils to choose their preferred pronounsto effect this change(Wertheimer, 2021). Since these were not hot-button issues while most of the instructors were growing up, it challenged them(Wertheimer, 2021). Due to this ignorance, teachers have found it challenging to appreciate the value of respecting their students’ chosen pronouns and identities, leaving transgender and nonbinary students feeling uncomfortable or unsafe in
3 their learning environment. It would be simpler for them to introduce themselves in public and get respect if this was addressed. Solution The problem can be overcome by raising awareness amongst educators, students, and community members about the significance of using preferred pronouns. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has created a model nondiscrimination policy for schools that addresses gender identity issues(Wertheimer, 2021). This is a huge improvement toward making the world more welcoming and secure for the LGBTQ community. The value of mutual respect can be taught in the classroom through the development of curricular programs and extracurricular activities. One good place to start is with Alia’s suggestion that students use their preferred pronouns on “get to know you”forms. In addition to displaying appreciation for those who do not identify with the binary gender system, this would encourage students to be more forthright about their identities(Wertheimer, 2021). There would be a safe place for students to express themselves freely and have those expressions valued. In addition, it will serve as a valuable learning experience for school leaders as they consider how to best teach their students to respect the identities and pronouns of their peers. Outcome The outcome of this challenge is to create an environment where gender and LGBTQ individuals are respected and recognized. It would help such people blend into society and feel secure. This is a critical step toward fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students since it will allow transgender and nonbinary students to express their identities without fear of judgment or persecution.
