LAB Worksheet – Z scores and reporting results PART 1: z-score interpretation For each student listed, state the z score for each test to 4 decimal places, and state which test they performed better on comparatively in standard units: 1.5 points 1. Josh: zsociology = 0.7605 zpsychology= 0.406 Better performance on Psychology 2. Grace: zsociology = 0 zpsychology = -0.0246 Better performance on Sociology 3. Kyle: zsociology = -1.2444 zpsychology = -1.1728 Better performance on Psychology Use the z-scores for each exam to answer the following questions comparing the 2 exams: 1.5 points 1. Who are the “star” students that scored 1 standard deviation or more above the mean on both exams? Claire, Anna, Ashley, Anivitha, Iyanna 2. Which students scored above the mean on the Sociology exam but below the mean on Psychology? Mariah 3. Which student scored the closest to the same on both exams (in z score units)? Ava, Anna, Isabella, Iyanna, Mercedes 4. Only 7 students had higher psychology raw test scores. But how many students performed better on the Psychology exam than on the Sociology exam based on the standardized z scores? 19 Students 5. Were the students correct that the psychology exam was much more difficult than the sociology exam? Explain. No, the students weren’t correct because there are more students that did better on the psychology test than the sociology test. 19 students did better on Psychology and 16 did better on Sociology. PART 2: Report the results of your analysis in proper APA format in a short paragraph. Using the write-up in the lab power point as a template, report the results of your analysis in APA format in a short paragraph. Be sure to include the following in your narrative: 6 points The analyses that were performed Means and standard deviations for both exams Skewness and kurtosis values with standard error for both exams Histogram with normal curve for both exams Percentage of students performing better on the psychology exam Number of students scoring above 1 SD on both exams. A descriptive analysis was conducted to compare student scores on a psychology test to their sociology test scores. 35 students were included in the analysis. A visual inspection of the histograms indicated that both exam and IQ scores were approximately normally distributed with a skewness of -2.005 (SE = 1.00) and kurtosis of 0.96 (SE = 1.33) for the psychology exam and a skewness of -2.249 (SE = 1.00) and kurtosis of 2.23 (SE = 1.33) for the Sociololgy test. Histograms for each test are shown in Figure 1. The mean score was calculated for both the Sociology exam (M = 113.70, SD = 1.00) and the psychology exam (M = 40.20, SD = 1.00). Each student’s score was converted to a z score for both tests for direct comparison in standard units. The
standardized scores revealed that 54% of students performed better on the psychology exam than on the Sociology test. Only one student scored above five standard deviation of the mean on both tests. Distribution Plots Z-Psychology Z-Sociology
