Pierre-Estimar 1 Glenda Pierre-Estimar Professor Arrindell HUS4319 January 17, 2022 Child-Centered Play Therapy I have chosen child-centered play therapy because I hope to do this form of therapy one day when I become a therapist. It is essential to help children understand the feelings that they might be going through and help them through those feelings when experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, and relational disorders. Children are vulnerable when it comes to their peers and navigating through their daily environment and pressures they deal with daily and have a tough time understanding specific forces in their environment. Child-centered play therapy is a form of play-based mental health intervention for children who experience social, emotional, and behavioral disorders. The child-centered play therapy approach demonstrates the therapist's process of building a relationship with the child, allows the child to lead during the session, makes the child's self-esteem, gives the child courage, participates in unstructured child play, and sometimes gives children boundaries when needed. Child-centered play is a form of therapy that is not directed and is used to help children communicate their experiences using toys and play. The goal is for parents and children to have a secure attachment and for parents to respond to their child's needs. My scenario will be talking about an eight-year-old boy named Levi who has struggled with focusing on class, becoming easily distracted, and having difficulty doing homework. His
Pierre-Estimar 2 single-parent mother is concerned because his grades are slipping, and he gets into trouble. In the first few sessions, I will take the time to get to know Levi and get to know his mother's parenting style. After the first few sessions, we scheduled play therapy every week. Any time Levi or his mother needed an emergency session, I would meet with his mother twice a month for parenting counseling to help her deal with the struggling she has been facing. During the play therapy, Levi seems to play in different playroom areas. He would jump from place to place. During more sessions, we discovered that he had ADHD. We continued play therapy with a little bit of structure that Levi created to give him more control during this time. He started to take his time and play in different areas of the playroom one at a time. During this time, he was able to focus on class and his homework, his grades improved, and he has been staying out of trouble. I like that it has no structure when it comes to child-centered play therapy. It allows children to be themselves where they feel safe, a place where it is a judgment-free zone. Child- centered play is an excellent form of therapy that helps children become more confident in themselves and their abilities.
