Being a social worker requires us to know or understand how medication works in the body. But when people ask questions about medication it is suggested that social workers refer them to doctors so that they are given correct and accurate answers. This doesn’t mean that social workers shouldn’t know the potential risks and rewards of using medication to treat problems. One potential risk of using medication to treat the problems of living versus mental illness is that researcher do not always know how well of if the medication will work correctly (Lundahl & Hull, pg. 92). Researchers have had trials that could not tell the difference between the medication for the mental illness and the fake medication. But a reward from this is that some trials that are done the medications showed better outcomes then the fake medications (pg.92). Another risk of using medications to treat problems of living versus mental illness is the side effects which could include blurred vision, confusion, constipation, dizziness and even symptoms that are related to Parkinson’s Disease (pg.95). The reward could mean that a person hallucinations and delusions can be under control. Yet another risk of using medications to treat problems of living versus mental illness is the amount of medications that is prescribed. For example, antianxiety medication involves getting increase amounts of one medication, GABA verse getting increase amounts of another, serotonin (pg.96). The problem is that increase amounts of one can lead to more anxiety while the increase in the other can lead to reduced anxiety. Thinking about my paradigm of medication, I would be very careful in discussing medications with clients if I discuss it with them. I have seen the overdose of medication as well as them not receiving enough or the right medications. Their problems are real and should not be an opportunity to make them an experiment. Not enough or incorrect medication can lead to seizures and other behaviors that are life threatening. Lundahl, B. W. & Hull Jr., G. H. (01/2014). The main systems are children services which include child protective services, foster children and adoption. There is also food programs, adult services and work first. These social systems were designed to bring the community together concerning the health and wellbeing of the people. But it doesn’t always work out the way it is designed because of the detraction of violence in this area which we are considered one of the most dangerous regions in the USA. The crime rates here are higher than they are in the entire United States. One thing that could be done to improve the community is offer some education in the areas that the most crime is committed. I do realize that that would require some people who aren’t afraid to get out and communicate with the people in the particular areas. Also, get more activities planned for the children that are educational and fun. One thing I have noticed is that the community has slowed down in bringing their youth out to certain events. I don’t know if it’s because of the area or it’s just parents or caretakers are fearful of their children’s lives. All of this is possible but what always hinders the community is money.
