Abstract Theoretical framework is very important in social work. Theories assist therapist in understanding a client’s behaviors, thoughts and feelings which will help a therapist know how to treat the client better. Theories allow therapist to build a rapport with a client and understand one’s culture, beliefs and background. Theories assist therapist in assisting clients in developing an individualized treatment plan and goals with the client that works best for the client and start treatment where the client is mentally.
For this paper, I chose Levi’s case study. Levi is a 35-year-old male who was diagnosed with HIV ten years ago. Levi is on medication that helps stop the progression to AIDS. Due to his diagnosis, Levi has withdrawn himself from social interactions and has not told his family about his diagnosis. Levi has been on a variety of medication for anxiety but often takes more than the prescribed diagnosis. Levi also admits to having a cocaine habit and uses for a “pick- me-up.” He feels like his life is slipping away and has reached out to a counselor regarding his problems. Levi appears to be living in secret for ten years and has withdrawn from family and friends which has caused his support system to diminish. Levi feels like his life is empty which is causing him to abuse his anxiety medication and abuse cocaine to help him get to work at times. Levi feels like his life is slipping away and he is feeling empty which has led him to reach out to a counselor for help. I believe the systems theory is the best approach to help Levi. System’s theory “proposes that people are products of complex systems, rather than individuals who act in isolation. In this theory, behavior is influenced by a variety of factors that work together as a system. These factors include family, friends, social settings, religious structure, economic class and home environment, which can all influence how individuals act and think.” ( 6 important theories in Social Work  2022) Since this theory is utilized for individuals who indulge in risky behavior and are a product of their environment, I thought this theory would best benefit Levi. Levi is indulging in

risky behavior such as abusing his prescribed anxiety medication and cocaine. Levi has also obtained HIV which can be a result of unsafe sex which is also another risky behavior. The system’s theory has its strengths and weaknesses. The theory’s strengths are, being able to identify the client’s environment, identifying what makes up a client such as, friends, family, economic status etc. The system’s theory also helps identify why the client behaves as they do. For example, Levi is very withdrawn and has not told his family or friends regarding his HIV diagnosis. This leads me to want to ask, how has his family responded to other things that Levi has shared that they may have not been supportive of, and this is why Levi does not want to share his diagnosis with his family. The system’s theory has its weakness. One weakness is that sometimes a client is so mentally ill that they do provide adequate information or tend to falsify information which can prevent the therapist in utilizing the system’s theory and being able to find solutions to the client’s problems. Sometimes the client needs medication to help become stable before utilizing the system’s approach. In my readings, they explain the system’s theory like baking a cake. “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. An easy example of this is  baking a cake . If you were to lay out all the ingredients of a cake, you would not have a cake. Instead, you would have the ingredients of cake and without all the ingredients you wouldn’t have what is needed to make a cake.” ( 6 important theories in Social Work  2022) Which is a perfect example of the weakness of not getting all the info needed from the client.
Cultural competence plays a big role in the system’s theory. The system theory is all about family, friends, environment and economic status. The system’s theory allows a therapist to be able to identify a client, cultural, religion, beliefs and background by understanding one’s environment and social and economic status. Although, if a client is not forthcoming it is hard to paint a picture of a client’s cultural, but I believe that can be a struggle with any kind of theory you would utilize. In the social work field, I believe there will not be a time you will not relate something a client says or does to human behavior and development. The system’s theory is all about identify why a client does something and how those behaviors can impact the client’s surroundings. For example, Levi does have family and friends, but he chooses not to tell them about his diagnosis. Levi appears to be ashamed of his diagnosis or is in fear of how his friends and family will react to the news. Due to Levi’s secret, he has withdrawn from his social life which has made his mental health decline and that is impacting is human behavior and has caused him to withdraw from a social life. In conclusion, I believe the systems theory works best for this case study. The system’s theory focuses on risky behavior which Levi is demonstrating. The system theory also explains why an individual is displaying different behaviors which are usually based of their social and environmental surroundings. Cultural competence and human behavior play a big role in the systems theory as well, due to this theory being all about people, places and things which can alter one’s beliefs and morals, so they are able to “fit in.” Levi is demonstrating how his diagnosis can impact his social life, family connection, support and mental health status and how
all this has caused him to abuse his medication and cocaine to assist him in coping with his problems.
