Theory Application LeAndra Faines February 16, 2019 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1
Theory Application This paper follows Joe and his family through the process of assessment, intervention and evaluation. It looks at what the family has to do in order to start healing and getting back to some form of wholeness. It touches on how to collect information and what needs to be done with the information that is collected. It talks about how valuable system theory is and it compares it to other theories. It starts with the processes of assessment, intervention and evaluation. The Processes of Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation The assessment stage of the social worker practice consists of any information that was collected about the family during the first few times of meeting them. There are two assessment tools that I would use, and they are Systems 5 and T.I.E.S. 3 . With Systems 5 , the social worker is given five different things that can be used as a checklist. (Wagner Clemons, Jane., 2014) This includes founding out why they are there to see you. Who does this visit include? Meaning, who are all involved. In Joe’s family case, there would be Bob, Theresa, Mike and Joe. During the assessment stage, I would need to determine if all the parties are safe in which Theresa, Joe and Mike are not. I would then call the appropriate persons to help with this issue. I would need to find out the strengths of the family and any resources that are needed. This stage gives the social worker opportunities to feed back to the family what was said, so that everything is clear and understood between the family and the social worker. This process can be long and embarrassing so it is good to find things about the family that can be used to show that they are doing well and they should continue to keep up the good work. Finally, with the Systems 5 tool, it would need to be determined if there is time for this process. The immediate danger has been dealt with, so I would continue with the process.
The other assessment tool, T.I.E.S. 3 , can be used to collect more data on the family. T.I.E.S. 3 is also a checklist used by the social worker to acquire more data to put into “an appropriate context for this unique client system’s situation.” (Wagner Clemons, Jane., 2014) This tool is used to found out if the family have any type of support. Is the neighborhood that they live in supportive of them? In the movie, there wasn’t any type of support given to the family. Maybe that was because they didn’t know what was happening with and to them. Finally, finding out if the family have any beliefs that they valued. Once again, there was nothing that I saw that would say they had any particular beliefs or values. Helping Joe’s family will take a skill of listening to what they are saying so that I can help them with humility and compassion. This process continues with intervention. This is doing the work that was decided upon in the assessment phase of this process. Intervention’s purpose is to reduce stress, resolve the problems and improve the overall well-being of the family. This will take some time when looking at Joe’s family. Most don’t think that the System Theory should be used anymore but looking at the “state of social work, a renewal of interest in the systems approach could be no bad thing.” (Payne, C., 1993) The intervention process will begin with finding the family a therapist that can help them sort through some of their issues. Next, I would as a social worker, put Theresa in contact with someone to help her in the job searching process. If she can learn new skills than she can get a better job which would lead to more money and a better life for her and the children. While going through this process, Theresa will be coping with not having her husband in her life and the transitioning process of it all. Once goals are started, the evaluation process must begin. Evaluation determines if the goals that are set are being met. A checklist can be formed from the standards set by national accrediting associations, advocacy groups or the notes taken by the social worker to monitor and identify areas of deficiency. System Theory’s Value System Theory will be most valuable to me because it is family centered. The situations can be handled by all parties together, unless the situation calls for separation. Which in this case it does because Bob abuses his family. So, he would have to be separated from his wife and children. When something like this happens to an individual or family, the time needs to be taken in order to help them get through it. There should not be a time stamp put on when or how long will it take to figure the situation out. Slow and steady will work, it just takes longer than the other processes or theories. A goal is set to help this family get through and past what has unfolded in their lives. They may say ‘I don’t have time for this’, but I say, ‘Do you want the abuse to stop? Do you want your life back and your children safe?’ Sometimes the situation is not looked at as a whole until it is broken down and explained the correct way. In the System Theory, Theresa, Bob, Joe and Mike have to be in the meetings together as a family. They cannot be separated because what is said should be heard by all individuals that are involved. This will give Mike and Joe an opportunity to say what they have been experiencing and how they feel about it. Theresa and Bob probably don’t realize the true effect they are having on their children. The parents will be instructed to keep the conversations appropriate because the children are in the room. If the parents need a session by themselves then that can be arranged. If the parents can get back to creating a feeling of security in the family then the child will see the love, honor and respect they have for one another. ( Pavlova, Ľ., 2014) I am a family person. Families should be given the chance to stay as a family unit. Compare and Contrast The two theories that I will compare and contrast with System Theory are Learning Theory and Nature/Evolutionary Theory. The learning theory focuses on facts and information
that are acquired and test given to see if the person has learned what was shown or demonstrated. (Lundahl, B. W. & Hull Jr., G. H., 2014) But most likely when we learn we pick up behaviors along the way. These behaviors whether positive or negative have to be dealt with. This is done through positive reinforcements and negative reinforcements. But whether it is either, the behavior will probably come back. This theory affirms that behaviors followed by positive consequences will be repeated while behaviors followed by negative consequences will stop. (Briggs, H. E., Sharkey, C., & Briggs, A. C., 2016) For example, a child that misbehaves, once corrected the child stills comes back and does the same thing over again. They call it positive and negative reinforcements but when I was growing up it was discipline. System Theory is similar in that it focuses on the facts and information that is given. The difference is that no test is given nor negative reinforcements. System theory focus is on the family and does all it can to help and encourage the family in a positive way. Another theory is the nature/evolutionary theory, which says that human behavior happens because it has survival value. (Lundahl, & Hull, 2014) Due to this survival value, humans pass some of these genes on to their children. In comparing system theory to this, it is similar in its purpose which is to help the family survive what they are going through. But the difference is that nature/evolutionary theory focus is survival. System theory focus is survival and what happens if survival is not possible. For example, Joe’s father moved out. If the situation can not be worked out between his mother and father, there is the possibility of divorce which means Joe and his family have to learn a different way of life.
