Pierre-Estimar 1 Glenda Pierre-Estimar Professor Sharon Arrindell HUS4352 March 16, 2022 Family Diversity Essay The three advanced human service skills that are important to use when working with culturally diverse clients are cultural competence, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to understanding and embracing cultures. I chose these three skills because it promotes positive change and allows the therapist to be aware of different cultures, beliefs, and traditions unfamiliar to the human service worker. The most important skill when dealing with culturally diverse clients is cultural competence. Cultural competence is understanding, welcoming, and cooperating with individuals from different cultures and belief systems different from your own. An example of cultural competence is during a session with a fundamentalist Mormon family where there is one husband and two wives. The couple wanted to start therapy because they had difficulty agreeing on whether they should add a new sister wife to the group. In this scenario, cultural competence plays a significant role. As therapists, we must be understanding, welcoming, and respect their values; as therapists, we might not agree with their belief system, but it is our job not to be judgmental and help our clients with their problems and help them come up with a solution. When dealing with culturally diverse clients, the following important skill is being committed to understanding and embracing cultures. Committed to learning and embracing cultures is defined by being dedicated to understanding cultural differences and accepting of

In this scenario, we have a Muslim family where the husband is the head of the house, and the wife and children do not say much in the session and are very submissive. The children struggled with having an arranged marriage and pleaded with their father to come and sit with a family therapist. I do not know much about Muslims and their religious beliefs, so I would take the time to learn more about this religion and the typical Muslim families' background to understand better the family dynamic, their faith, and what may be offensive. For this session, I would be understanding, respectful, and accepting of their family structure and find a way to help them with the problem at hand. The last skill when working with a diverse clientele is cultural sensitivity. Cultural sensitivity is being aware of different cultural backgrounds and the similarities between different people and being able to adapt to different cultures while interacting with others of a culture. When talking about cultural sensitivity, there are many scenarios where this skill would be used, for example, if a client does not shake hands with a woman because it is not a custom in his background. In this session, you would not initiate a handshake because the therapist knows what is traditional to this specific client and his background. When dealing with diverse clients, a therapist will use cultural sensitivity in all of their sessions to adapt and respect the different cultural backgrounds of their clients. In conclusion, there are many different skills that a therapist would use when dealing with a diverse clientele. Cultural competence, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to understanding and embracing foreign cultures are the three main human service advanced skills that therapists should be aware of when dealing with clients of different cultures and beliefs.
