Theory Identification and Analysis LeAndra Faines January 27, 2019 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1
Theory Identification and Analysis Theory is an important part of the way social workers look at cases whether it’s for individuals, groups or communities. The theory helps the social worker figure out how to help the client with their problems. Some social workers prefer to practice according to their own understanding and beliefs. This, however, could put clients in harms way because guide lines are not being followed. Social workers are responsible for knowing different theories that can be used to help in their social work practice. There are many theories that can be used but the one that I choose for my case study is the system theory. This theory says that Joe’s behavior is influenced by something or someone. My heart goes out to Joe because his parents are failing him, and he compensates this by failing in school and stealing. Joe steals to pay back a debt that his father created and to replace records for his mother that his father destroyed. Key Components of Systems Theory System theory says that all behavior is influenced by factors that work as a system. For example, Joe’s parents, school, environment and economic situation causes Joe to lie and steal. His father owns money to teacher at school and the teacher is pressing Joe to talk to his father about it. This leads to a confrontation with Joe and his father where Joe ends up on the floor because his father hit him. Joe’s mother is no help at the moment because she has problems of her own from working long hours to coming home to be abused. His father works as the school janitor and this embarrassed Joe. So, he lied about his father’s occupation. The teacher knew this and decided to teach him a lesson by pulling his pants down in front of the class and spanking him. Instead of his father protecting Joe, he fusses at Joe because he feared that he may lose his job. Joe’s other is not there to cook for the family so Joe eats junk food mostly for his meals. Since Joe’s father owns money to people at school and his mother’s favorite record collection
was destroyed, Joe steals from his employer so that these problems can be resolved. If Joe’s home, school, environment and economic life is handled correctly, it will have a positive impact on his future behavior. And if it’s not handled, he will get worst. Evaluate the System Theory The system theory says that family and organizations help solve a problem even if they are not involved. Joe’s teacher wasn’t helping when she embarrassed him in front of the class. His father did not help by taking the side of the school during this incident. His parents didn’t help by arguing and fighting while their child clearly needed them. Joe’s brother did try to help but he also was working his way through the situation of living with their parents as well. It did not help that Joe was hit and humiliated by his father when Joe tried to talk to him about the teacher who he owed monies. So, what does Joe do, he decides to help himself and his family by stealing. System theory strives for homeostasis, which is survival, and the forming of alliances. (Lundahl, B. W. & Hull Jr., G. H., 2015) Meaning, there is a support system backing you even if they have don’t have the problem. They are there to help you get through yours. Joe did not have that support from his family. His school counselor finally got involved because he handled the in school suspension students and Joe was always the only one in there. This theory fits Joe’s situation perfectly. It will allow the social worker to put individual focus on Joe so that he can get the help that is needed. I feel like Joe always get the worst part of any situation that is presented. Strengths and Weaknesses of Systems Theory The weaknesses of systems theory deals with it being a complex system. Anything that is complex will most likely have slow and steady progress. All are involved in systems theory including friends and co-workers. Small task become big because it requires the input and output

of so many people. For example, Joe’s school counselor had to investigate to find out how to get in contact with Joe’s parents. He done this by talking with Joe’s friend at school. It took endless phone calls to accomplish this. By the time the counselor found Joe he had robbed his job. The systems theory strives for survival, so it only agrees with changes that improve the system. This once again says that results will be slow but steady. The strengths of systems theory are that it allows relationships to be studied. This can help with other families and their situations. What Joe and his family are going threw will help and encourage the next person or family with the same problem. Another strength is that it makes sure that the focus is on the family and their relationships to the persons involved. The systems theory allows encouragement and help from all parties that are involved with the situation or the people in the situation. Cultural Competence of Systems Theory Cultural competence is the ability to communicate with, understand and successfully interact with people from other cultures. This requires us to be aware of what our own views are or what it is that we believe when it comes to the difference way of life. Since the systems theory includes everybody that is connected to the individuals it just might be a cultural crossing. And when this happens we must be able to respect the diversity of the other cultural enough to know what this entitles and make them feel comfortable in expressing it. The biggest change that can be made in this area is a person’s attitude. How we carry ourselves when it comes to something different or doing something a different way tells a lot about your character. Systems theory says that if you are going through then I am going through. If you are hurting, then I am hurting. A good example of cultural competence is the experiences that many African Americans perceive the law enforcement as the enemy. (Lundahl & Hull, 2015)
Systems Theory and Human Behavior and Development Assessment, intervention and evaluation is sometimes looked at as being the beginning of a social worker’s work. The social worker and client relationship that is formed must be solid and true because the process of the systems theory is slow but steady. There must be a commitment because not all situations will work out as planned. In reality, most situations will not fit in a neat package; but people make it by surviving day to day, hour to hour, struggle to struggle but yet they believe the possibilities. ( Clemens, J. W., 2014) There are criticisms concerning systems theory. I mentioned before that the process of this theory is slow, so patience is expected of the people involved. The process is long and slow, but it works for certain scenarios. Social workers know that the better the assessment is the better the outcome will be. For some slow and steady is not the better assessment but it is the better outcome. Many tools have been developed to help the young people stay on course throughout the process of their situation. There has been a concern that interventions that are capable of making differences in the lives of individuals and families are not being used in regular social worker practice. (Withers, M. C., Reynolds, J. E., Reed, K., & Holtrop, K., 2017)
