Discussion In your initial post, identify the victimization theory you feel best explains how people and businesses increase their odds of becoming victims of crime. Using the "Becoming a Victim" resources as support, consider the questions below as you build a case for why that theory best explains how people and businesses increase their odds of becoming victims of crime. What do you feel separates this theory from the others? What does it explain that the other theories do not? No theory is perfect. What are the weaknesses or shortcomings of the theory you have chosen? How does the theory you've chosen account for a business or corporation increasing their chances of becoming a victim? Hi everyone! I hope your week is going well! After reading the becoming a victim resources, the one theory that stood out for me is the low self- control theory which aims to explain delinquent and equivalent behaviors such as using drugs, smoking, drinking, and other risky behaviors. (Takahashi & James, 2018). This theory explains why some people turn to criminal behavior and others do not. It has been shown that lack of supervision and guidance by caregivers as small children can lead to low self-control behaviors both in teen years and adulthood (Takahashi & James, 2018). These individuals have six elements that are usually there that cause him or her to offend. They are impulsive, they prefer simple tasks, they have risk-seeking potential, they prefer physical activities, they are self-centered, and they are temperamental (Takahashi & James, 2018). This can leave them as both victims or the perpetrators. A major weakness of this theory is that while they have low self-control, they can find themselves into the routine activities theory in which they do the same things at the same time to cut back on their impulsive behaviors thus cutting down on their frustrations (Takahashi & James, 2018). If the business or corporation is run by someone who has low self-control it can lead to impulsive decisions made by the owner thus leaving the employees never knowing where they stand. Say for instance the owner decides to take company money and go to Las Vegas for the weekend because he/she can for sure double it at the tables and they lose it all when payday comes around the employees are without a paycheck. The same can be said for a scammer getting ahold of the business owner with some new product that they should try the owner could give out bank information or even customer information thus leaving the company or customers exposed to fraudulent activity. ~Shawna References: Takahashi, Y., & James, C.
