Paige Gwyin Article critique 1 TAG students The academic journal that I chose for the first article critique is titled “The social and emotional world of gifted students: Moving beyond the label”. This scholarly article was written by Kristofor R. Wiley and he works at the James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia and works with educational foundations as well as exceptionalities. This article caught my eye due to the title and how it focuses on the social and emotional needs of students who qualify for gifted and talented services and highlights some of the stresses and things that they deal with from being gifted and talented in many different ways. The article I chose was about student who are identified by school staff as gifted and talented and how these students are gifted academically, socially and emotionally and go through experiences with these things as well. It also discusses how some students who could be identified as talented and gifted could end up being looked over and them would not end up classified as identified students because of other social and emotional needs that are complex and may be not met. The term gifted and talented has grown and evolved over time and what it once was which some would identify as not as common and in today’s world it is more commonly thrown about. The article focuses on highlighting how the social and emotional needs of these identified talented and gifted students are often put on hold and not as focused on as they should. This then leads to other underlying issues that may or may not ever be then addressed There were a few takeaways that I found to catch my attention. Most of them were the frameworks mentioned within the scholarly article along with Pfeiffer’s model which is another way to frame approaches that focus on differentiated learning styles. We all know that as
educators we must be able to teach content in differentiated ways. How one may learn is not how another will be able to learn the content. Another idea that stuck out to me was how focusing on the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students is vital and will impact their learning no matter how high they are. There are different areas in which one may be considered gifted for example one could be high academically, one could be high considered high with their intelligences. Students who may identify as high intelligence are generally ones who may not be as academically gifted. This made me think about some students who could have a disability that would identify or fall under the category. Teaching students with disabilities is a challenge and reward all in one. Differentiation is vital in all classroom settings and what works for one may not work for another and as educators we have to scaffold our teaching to best fit the needs of all learners. I felt as though I connected to this scholarly journal in many ways especially as preservice teacher and working in the education field for the past five years. I felt like I really connected to the part when they were discussing what gifted and talented used to be and what it has evolved into with education today. That stuck out to me because of how much education has changed and what it has become and where it still needs to go. I agreed a lot with the social and emotional learning aspects of these gifted and talented learners and focusing on how important those needs are as well to thrive academically and intelligently. The frame works that they discuss as well are points that I also agreed with and took notes on how to approach learners and differentiate for students. In conclusion, this article had a lot of knowledge to offer for me as a preservice teacher as well as the education position I am in right now. I learned a lot and took in a lot of
information and thought I knew more than I truly did on this topic. I am looking forward to reading more into gifted and talented students and how to best teach them as well as all learners within my classroom.
