SWK 350 Week 4 DQ 1 You are a social worker employed in a community behavioral health agency. You are a therapist who sees children and families in their homes. You are working with a family to implement a behavioral plan for a 4-year-old diagnosed with autism. Through a series of events, you discover that the family does not have running water in the home because the landlord shut the water off to the entire apartment building which includes 18 apartments. The family informs you the entire building has been without water for 6 days with no end in sight. You arrived at the home today intending to focus on the behavioral plan, but are concerned the family and apartment building residents' basic need of access to water is not being met. 1. Do you encounter an ethical dilemma with this scenario? If so, detail the ethical dilemma in this situation. If you don't encounter an ethical dilemma with this scenario, detail why. 2. What social work values, principles, and standards relate to this scenario? 3. Select an ethical decision-making model and use the NASW Code of Ethics to detail how you, the social worker would respond to what has occurred thus far. 4. In the actions you detail in #3, point to the social work values, principles, or standards that guided your specific actions. Hello Class, I do see this as an ethical dilemma. Not on my part but on the owner of the apartment complex. I would look up the laws in that state regarding responsibility of the landlord. In California the laws state that if the building is uninhabitable due to issues that are not caused by the tenant. A hotel or other living space equal to the apartment. If you are the cause of the issue, it is up to you to pay for your own replacement housing. If it is a city or State problem the landlord is not responsible, but you can contact your renter’s insurance. You can also call and speak to code compliance for their assistance. That issue must be resolved. As the social worker in this case, you should a plan of action started before you even get there. You can still sit with the family while you have reached out about the water problem and go over some of the behavioral modification’s that they can start implementing. I would at least call and see about getting at least drinking water for the night if there were no available rooms even at the local shelters. I would follow up about this lack of water in the morning. It is my ethical duty to make sure that they all get their essential needs met ( Code of Ethics: English , 2023). Leeanne Sundberg Do you encounter an ethical dilemma with this scenario? If so, detail the ethical dilemma in this situation. If you don't encounter an ethical dilemma with this scenario, detail why. I personally do not see any ethical dilemmas if I were to help advocate for the client, his family, and other residents in the apartment complex. I would see it as an ethical dilemma if I did not do anything about it, as water is a basic need, and they should not go without it for as long as they already had with not knowing when they will have it next. What social work values, principles, and standards relate to this scenario? The NASW social work values that relate to this scenario are service and social justice, as it would be our responsibility as the social worker on that case, to help advocate for the client, and his family at the very least ( Code of Ethics: English , 2023). Having running water is a basic need, if the running water is not available and could not be an option, I would advocate for the client and see what other options there are to get water provided. Select an ethical decision-making model and use the NASW Code of Ethics to detail how you, the social worker would respond to what has occurred thus far. With this scenario, I would personally use ETHIC to get through this, as it would guide me through this process. It would allow me to be able to evaluate, think, hypothesize, identify, and consult a supervisor. In the actions you detail in #3, point to the social work values, principles, or standards that guided your specific actions. As I had previously stated, the social work values, principles, or standards that guided my specific actions would be service and social justice, as the client and other individuals in the apartment complex have not had running water in six days and counting. Leeanne, Your post was amazing. I found that this assignment made me look at state laws as well as city laws about the responsibility and whom it lies on to make sure that tenants have their basic needs that a landlord provides. I was amazed that even renter’s insurance may help with expenses if you are displaced like in this case lack of water. I find it great that with a click of a
button on our computers we can find so many different resources. The internet is a blessing for this if it is used correctly. Blessings, Joy Milka Kinuthia Mwangi This scenario does present an ethical dilemma for the social worker. The ethical dilemma is caused by a conflicting obligation in this case, access to water which is an immediate need for the family and the larger community and the planned implementation of behavioral plan for the 4-year-old autistic child. The values, principles and standards relating to this scenario include service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person. Social workers are obligated to provide services to clients and in respecting the inherent dignity and worth of the person warrants the social worker to facilitate the help needed in meeting their most basic. Advocating for social justice will certify the provision of water by investigating the reason for the water shut off. In the first place. The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics standard 6.03 Public Emergency states that social workers should provide professional services in public emergencies to the greatest extent possible (NASW, 2021). This statement furthers emphasis on working on the immediate need first. Using the ETHIC decision-making model, I would evaluate the overall situation due to its conflicting nature, thinking of the immediate need, find resolute so we can embark on the actual reason for the visit. Seek possible avenues and resources to enable access to water for the family and the community all the while communication with the family. National Association of Social Workers. (2021). Code of Ethics . National Association of Social Workers. https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English Milka, I like the way that you stated about the conflicting obligations that need to be addressed. There may not be an immediate solution today but there are ways to get that preverbal ball rolling. At least we can make calls to get drinking water for the night. We then can continue to address the situation in the morning. We should have an outline of the behavioral modification plan so you still should be able to go over some of the plan to get it implemented. We should be able to multitask in this case. Blessings, Joy
