from Module 2 Discussion Jan 14, 2024 9:58PM Sydney Kane Today, kids have everything right at their fingertips, from playing games to social media to shopping and ordering food. Technology has changed how kids live their day-to-day lives outside of school, some of which can be transferable into the classroom setting. An excellent point was brought up in the article titled, Bridging the Disconnect: A Layered Approach to Jump-Starting Engagement, "This hard realization that today's classroom environment does not mirror the way today's students are living their lives outside of school or what they need to be well prepared to participate, thrive, and compete in the 21st century economy is actually exacerbating the existing relevancy crisis in American education" (Werner-Burke, N., Spohn, J., Spencer, J., Button, B., & Morral, M., 2012). It is our job to meet our students where they are academically and socially. I know it's easier said than done, but that's part of our job. Our students learn differently and rely on us to provide an education that best fits their way of learning. The analogy I would use to describe or create a layered curriculum is baking a cake. Ladies and gentlemen, Layered Curriculum has entered the chat... "The learning process is arranged in three layers, considering these differences of the individuals" (Gün, E. S.). Layer C- Basic knowledge: The batter of the cake is composed of several ingredients. These ingredients come together to create the flavor of the cake. The taste of the cake helps determine the best outcome of the flavor of the frosting. This layer is where knowledge is acquired to understand the outcome better. Layer B- Using knowledge to problem solve: We have analyzed the specific flavor of the cake, so now, the frosting has to be carefully thought through. Measurements need to be precise to ensure the correct thickness of the frosting. It should spread evenly and smoothly across the cake itself. The chosen flavor needs to balance, compare, and complement the flavor of the cake but can't overpower or mask it. This layer is where the student will build upon the previous layer. They will use the knowledge gained in layer c to help solve problems and analyze and compare applied skills. Layer A- Producing: Toppings/decorations are the last step. The outcome of the cake and frosting flavors will determine the toppings used to bring the whole cake together. This final step is critical because the toppings and decorations are seen first. We taste with our eyes before we do with our mouths. The placement of each topping and decoration is vital to how the audience perceives the final product. Their final product came to be through analyzing, problem-solving, and thinking critically about how they wanted to present their final product.
Like the cakes above, each child learns differently; therefore, their basic knowledge, application, and outcome/product will be and look different. No matter if the same steps and directions are followed. References: Werner-Burke, N., Spohn, J., Spencer, J., Button, B., & Morral, M. (2012).
