SWK 330-Topic 8 DQ 2 (Obj. 8.2) Oct 23-27, 2023 Using the interview found in Chapter 19 of the textbook, identify ways that a social worker can advocate for their clients, but also promote their right to self- determination and skill growth. Class, After reading Chapter 19, a social worker can contact an ASL interpreter so as a client they can be fully understood and can fully understand you. Many resources are available now that in the past were harder to find. Health care and insurance to help with their unique needs. Promoting self-determination and empowerment with encouragement is crucial for the future well-being. Because of the disability some additional resources may be available at he states or even federal level. That is our job to find them for our client. Joy In Chapter 19, a social worker is able to advocate for their client by finding appropriate resources that can be utilized to help them succeed and empower them. These resources could like like anything from education to housing or health insurance. In this specific case, the resource of education was being able to be improved for someone that was deaf, ASL has become more regulated in the education system and has been recognized more especially for this undergraduate program. A social worker can help promote self determination and skill growth by empowering their personal abilities. Being able to give the encouragement to our clients and help them believe they can go out and be successful is extremely crucial. Brianna *Brianna, Great insight in the reading. When working at the brain injury department it was interesting. Many can not speak right away so they learn sign language, so they are able to communicate with staff and others. I had never learned sign language before this. It sure did not take long and I felt so proud that I could learn from my clients, and it made them proud to teach me. It was a great opportunity and learning experience. Joy A social worker can advocate for their clients as seen in the interview presented in Chapter 19, by finding and providing essential resources and services that empower the clients. This might help the client with education, healthcare, job training, and housing resources. In this case it is seen that education is being achieved for this individual in the Deaf Community, because ASL was accepted as a language option for the university's undergraduate program and the study of American Deaf Culture. A social
worker can promote self-determination and skill growth, by helping them advocate for the right to have their voices heard by providing training, workshops, and community resources. Although the social worker helps in being a voice for them, it is allowing the Deaf Community to have control over their lives. Sincerely, Lorena
