Benjamin Sosa Professor Selleck SPCH140 15 November 2022 Speech Four: Policy Advocacy Speaker: Benjamin Sosa Date: 15 November 2022 Speech Topic: Immigration in the US General Purpose: To convince the US government that illegal immigration must come to an end and find a solution for illegal immigrants already living in the US. Attention Getter: America is the country that allows the most immigrants to enter both legally and illegally. FAIR estimates that approximately 15.5 million illegal aliens reside within the United States. (FAIR, 2021) Thesis: America is the country that allows the most immigrants to enter the country, the government needs to be stricter at borders and have more control over the situation. Specific Purpose: I would like to propose an end to illegal immigration across the US, which currently is “supposedly illegal’ but there isn't a consistent method to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in.
1. Attention: Illegal Immigration in the US. Immigration has been a touchstone of the U.S. political debate for decades, as policymakers have weighed economic, security, and humanitarian concerns. Congress has been unable to reach an agreement on comprehensive immigration reform for years, effectively moving some major policy decisions into the executive and judicial branches of government and fueling debate in the halls of state and municipal governments. 2. As of the end of 2021, FAIR estimates that approximately 15.5 million illegal aliens reside within the United States. This number is substantially higher than FAIR’s previous estimate of 14.5 million in 2020 (FAIR, 2021). II. Need: Our reliance on the system and if it benefits the US. 1. U.S. Border Patrol, an agency within the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is responsible for securing U.S. borders between official ports of entry and for preventing the illegal flow of people and contraband, such as drugs, from entering the country (GAO, 2022) 2. Although there are several ways to stop illegal immigration, clearly not all methods are working because immigrants are still able to cross the border. 3. We need a system that is going to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border. We need a way to track people with visas so that they don’t overstay them and become
illegal. We also need programs to help the children of illegal immigrants that are technically legal themselves. 4. On June 15, 2012, President Obama announced DACA, an executive action to lift the shadow of deportation for young people who came to the United States as undocumented immigrants. A decade later President Obama recently sat down with five Dreamers who enrolled in the program to reflect on the impact of DACA, how they’re contributing to their communities today and the urgent work that remains to offer Dreamers a permanent solution to their status. (DACA, 2022) III. Satisfaction: Would completely stopping illegal immigration be beneficial for the country as a whole? 1. A study by the Institute on taxation and economic policy or ITAP revealed that undocumented immigrants contribute significantly to state and local taxes by collectively paying an estimated 11.64 billion dollars per year. (ITAP, 2017) 2. Undocumented immigrants nationwide pay an average an estimated of 8% of their incomes in state and local taxes (ITAP, 2017) 3. Illegal immigrants tend to take the jobs that Americans don’t want but are needed. IV. Action: Take necessary measures 1. Introduce legislation that bans, or limits, the development of illegal immigration.

2. Strengthen security measures at borders and invest in technology to track people with visas. Conclusion: In conclusion, there are positives and negatives form having immigrants in the country. The number of people that enter illegally needs to be controlled and measures need to be more drastic.
