Guevara 1 Caitlin Guevara Professor Kohn SOW 3740 October 3, 2023 Case Study 1: When Life Changes in an Instant 1. What immediate tasks would a social worker, child life specialist, etc. need to carry out to respond to the individuals and families in this crisis? What needs to happen in the hospital? Upon discharge? o The immediate tasks a social worker or child life specialist would need to carry out to respond to the individuals and families in crisis are assisting the individuals in understanding the situation and what medical procedures are going to happen to help them. In the hospital, all the procedures that need to be done must be explained to the individual and their families, along with all their options. Upon discharge, the individuals and their families need to be well informed of the recovery process, healing psychologically, and moving forward. 2. Beyond the effects of this crisis on the individuals and families involved, how might this crisis affect the school and larger community? o This crisis might affect the school and larger community negatively. Because Gary and David were still young adults, this could be seen as a big loss for the community and the school. Especially because Gary was
Guevara 2 taken off life support, and it was unknown if David would ever be able to walk again due to his injuries. 3. As a survivor of the accident, what thoughts and feelings might David have related to the trauma experienced? Identify the losses specific to his injury and death of his best friend. o David might be feeling guilt related to the trauma he experienced. Possibly questioning “why” he survived but his best friend didn’t. The losses he may be experiencing are loss of functionality, loss of self-worth/value due to the loss of his ability to walk. While the loss he is experiencing because of the death of his best friend is physical and psychosocial. 4. Identify the impacted parties? What support services (resources) will the families need including the siblings (David’s brother is 7; Gary’s sister is 14)? Think about the developmental levels of each sibling. o The impacted parties are both boys’ families and extended relatives, their classmates and teachers, the girls they went to prom with, and their other friends. The support services that the families need are therapists and grief counselors. Especially for their younger siblings, for David’s brother, he may need a counselor known to work with young children dealing with grief and loss. Especially because his brother may not fully understand what happened and David’s injuries. While for Gary’s sister, since she is a teenager, she may be feeling a lot of emotions due to hormonal changes and being so close in age to her brother. She will need a counselor that
Guevara 3 works with teens to help with the trauma and other things she may be feeling because of her brother's death. 5. What are your thoughts about end-of-life care for Gary and disconnecting the ventilator? What do you believe to be the thoughts, concerns, his family had when making the decision? o I think that Gary’s end of life care and being disconnected from the ventilator was the best option for him and his family. The thoughts and concerns his family may have had when making the decision may have been about Gary’s quality of life, and if he would’ve wanted to continue living on life support. 6. Discuss nonfinite and ambiguous loss as it relates to this case. How does the dual process theory apply (remember oscillation and restoration)? o Nonfinite and ambiguous loss may affect David because he survived the crash but lost his ability to walk, and his best friend dying due to the accident. These losses may also affect his family because his physical appearance has changed, and he isn’t the same as he used to be. o These losses will also affect Gary’s family. Because Gary died, his family and other friends will experience nonfinite and ambiguous loss. o The dual process theory applies to this case especially for the families. They may try to avoid discussing the losses they’ve experienced and try to bottle it up instead of getting through it, understanding the loss, and processing their grief.
