Social policy is value-driven. Identify two values undergirding government policy in the past and compare and contrast these to values expressed in the current NASW Code of Ethics. Share your two personal values and how they align or conflict with those of the profession. Do you see these values interfering with the performance of your work as a social worker? Why or why not? One of the core values undergirding government policy that is still happening today as it did over 50 years ago is unfair labor wages of women. Females earn less wages than males in nearly all occupations. Women earns 82 cents for every dollar a man earns. While this has raised as years went by, unfortunately the pandemic has set women’s labor force participation back more than 30 years. The pandemic stalled gains made toward closing the wage gap, layoffs and lack of child care have forced women out of the workforce completely. This could definitely interfere with work performance. Why would a female social worker, who does the same exact work as the male social worker want to be as productive with less pay? That just seems unethical to me. Another value undergirding government policy is the core values on which the social work’s mission is based. As a social worker, we are expected to treat clients with dignity and respect regardless of their history, sexuality or race. We should not be quick to judge but to give them the same quality of services as others we serve. No, these don’t interfere with my performance because I don’t judge and give the best quality of services to my ability. https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code- of-Ethics-English https://blog.dol.gov/2021/03/19/5-facts-about-the-state-of-the- gender-pay-gap
