Gokhale 1 Caitlin Guevara Professor Brasel EEC 4661 Oct. 5, 2023 Introduction to Early Childhood Education Chapter 9: Scheduling and Curriculum Planning 1. I made a connection o “A curriculum is much more than a collection of activities. It provides the framework for developing a coherent set of learning experiences that enables children to reach the identified goals” - Because activities take up the largest block of time each day, applying the curriculum to it is especially important. Being able to have activities and curriculum flow together will benefit the teacher and the children. 2. This part is confusing, this part is important o The section on meals and mealtimes was confusing, especially knowing what to give to children or if they bring their own snacks from home. Or knowing what kinds of foods each kid can eat and keeping allergies and diverse cultures in mind. 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! Part o “A curriculum is much more than a collection of activities. It provides the framework for developing a coherent set of learning experiences that enables children to reach the identified goals.”
Gokhale 2 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) o “Continuity of care” - the practice of keeping very young children together with the same caregiver or caregivers for extended periods of time, often 3 years, so as not to interfere with the close bonding and familiarity they have established. 5. I inferred from what is written here o “Having a sound understanding of child development gives you the background to plan developmentally appropriate activities.” - What I inferred from this part of the text is how complex children can be, so by understanding them it becomes beneficial for the educators and how they teach material and benefits the children because they are getting an education that is well thought out by their teachers. Chapter 10: Creative Development Through the Curriculum 1. I made a connection o “Creative children are more sensitive to the environment, more tuned into its sensations. One trait common to creative people is heightened sensory awareness” - Allowing children to be creative and express themselves creatively gives them the opportunity to be more in tune with their environment, especially in the classroom. 2. This part is confusing, this part is important o “The early childhood environment promotes creativity by allowing children to explore freely and to select from a variety of accessible
Gokhale 3 materials.” - This part is important because it gives an insight into how early childhood education and the environment are beneficial for children as they develop. Allowing children to be creative gives them the opportunity to explore things in many ways. 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! Part o “Creativity is nurtured when children have access to a wide variety of materials and are encouraged to use them in their own unique ways.” 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) o “Prosocial behaviors” - positive, commonly valued social behaviors such as sharing, empathy, and understanding. 5. I inferred from what is written here o “Observers also note that Reggio teachers take art very seriously and do not consider it a frivolous child’s activity; they consider it a strong form of symbolic communication of ideas, feelings, and emotions.” - What I inferred from this part of the text is that because art is still seen as a child's activity, it does not give people the chance to really express themselves creatively. But with Reggio Emilia, they encourage the use of art and stand strongly behind it because of its benefits for children's development.
