After reading the article “6 Models of Co-teaching” and watching the video “Co- Teaching Is a Marriage,” I think the team teaching model is being used. Katierose Dobrzykowski is a general education teacher, and Mrs. Dunaway is a special education teacher. They share a classroom every day, and both teach in front of the classroom and support each other. The advantage of team teaching is that the two teachers will motivate each other, learn from each other, and improve the quality of teaching. Also, two teachers can show students different teaching styles and personalities, and students can learn how teachers communicate and work collaboratively. In addition, two people can teach social, science, and other subjects by simulating real-life scenarios and information. When one teacher is teaching, another teacher can promptly correct the student’s inappropriate behavior, and the teacher does not need to interrupt the class to correct the student. The disadvantage of team teaching is that both teachers need a lot of time to discuss planning lessons and coordinating lessons. Also, they need time to get used to and trust each other to establish a working relationship where equals are valued. Another critical point is that the class rules and classroom instructions of the two teachers must be consistent. Otherwise, the students will be confused and have destructive emotions. I also read the related story “Pairing Up” about Ms. Dobrzykowski and Mrs. Dunaway’s co-teaching. I found they also used the model of parallel teaching. Some students who need to spend a lot of time practicing go to Mrs. Dunaway’ Station to practice their division lesson for the day.
