Gokhale 1 Caitlin Guevara Professor Brasel EEC 4661 Oct. 3, 2023 Introduction to Early Childhood Education Chapter 7: Helping Children Cope with Stress 1. I made a connection “Stress involves both physical and emotional reactions. Young children have limited resources to help them deal with their stress and may, in fact, feel a total sense of powerlessness” - If we do not give children the proper resources to deal with their stress or understand their stress, their sense of powerlessness increases. By providing the proper resources for children, we can help reduce their stress levels and empower them in the process. 2. This part is confusing, this part is important “All states provide a basic network of social programs to assist vulnerable children and families [but] children do much better in some states than others.” - This section of the text was confusing at first because while I knew that in different states the programs to assist children and families were different, I was confused on how they were different. But as I continued to read the section, I understood why this report was important because it highlights the disproportionate level of resources for children.
Gokhale 2 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! Part “One way in which the early childhood teacher can reduce stress in young children is to provide a supportive, developmentally appropriate classroom environment.” - The classroom is like a second home for many students, the environment of the classroom is a vital piece of their development! 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) “Progressive relaxation” - a technique in which various specified muscle groups are tensed, then relaxed systematically. 5. I inferred from what is written here. “The isolation of being away from one’s cultural support system and the struggle to understand the society in which they find themselves can be highly stressful.” - What I inferred from this part of the text is how important involving children’s cultures and their families is to their development. Especially if it may be causing them stress or feelings of isolation. Chapter 8: The Physical Environment 1. I made a connection “Their awareness of their surroundings—called a sense of place—helps children begin to grasp concepts of the science of geography” - Allowing children to explore and become aware of their surroundings benefits them in multiple ways, giving them the opportunities to learn new information in their own way.
Gokhale 3 2. This part is confusing, this part is important The use of playscapes in a child’s development and how to apply it to their learning was confusing at first. But after reading more about them and how they can provide children with new opportunities to explore and develop, especially natural playscapes. 3. This is my favorite or an AHA! part “A pleasant, well-organized environment that provides children with a variety of age-appropriate activity options supports children’s development in all domains and enhances learning” 4. I learned something new, (including the definition of an unknown word that you looked up) “playscapes” - contemporary, often innovative, playground structures that combine a variety of materials. 5. I inferred from what is written here. “Classroom equipment has to be sized appropriately for the children” - By making sure the equipment and furniture in the classroom is the appropriate size for the children, it can create a more welcoming environment and allows them to fully explore. Aiding in their learning and development.
