Northcentral University MFT-5106 Quantitative Article Critique Assignment Guidelines 1. Please keep the 12 questions below in your document preceding your answer (i.e., don’t delete the question after you answer it or prepare the paper in a narrative format without the questions embedded). 2. You don’t need to cite the authors in each of your responses. It’s clear what article you are referring to. 3. However, any time you include a short quote from the article in your response (which should be done sparingly), please provide the page number from the article. 4. Ensure you appropriately paraphrase the material from the article in your response to each question (use no more than 3-4 of the authors’ words in a row when summarizing information from the article). 5. All discussions of the study that follow should be in past tense as the study has already happened (Note the use of was and were above rather than is and are in the sample text in #1 below). 6. If you didn’t cite any other sources in your critique, besides the article you critiqued, you can delete the word References at the bottom of this page as you won’t need a reference list. Critiqued by: Donique Wint Date: August 27, 2023 Source reference ( provide the complete citation of the article here, using correct APA format, which you are critiquing ): Busby, D.M., Hsin-Yao Chiu, L. Perceived Conflict Styles of Adult Children and their Parents: What Is the Connection?.   J Child Fam Stud   26 , 3412–3424 (2017). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10826-017-0839-9 1
1. Introduce the study by providing a brief summary of the focus and the research question(s) or purpose for the study. ( “The focus of this study was… There were ___ research questions: …. No research questions were stated, but the authors indicated the purpose of the study was….” ) The research study I selected for this assignment is to understand the conflict styles of individuals and for their parents to understand the impact interparental conflict can have on their children growing up. This study evaluates the individual's and their partner's conflict style, determining the effect of interparental conflict and how it influences the conflict styles they select. 2. Write a bullet point outline (paraphrased) of the main themes or points the authors discussed in their literature review. (e.g., “Emotional intimacy has been shown to influence relationship satisfaction; Self- disclosure is important for couple’s emotional intimacy…”) How couples manage their conflict the four different conflict styles People learn from watching others. For example, children may adapt to their parent's conflict style.  Individuals are attracted to the characteristics of their parents.  3. What purpose does a review of the literature serve, in general, for a quantitative research study (Remember this question is not about this study , it’s about quantitative research studies in general)? The literature review is the background information on the topic. The review allows the readers to understand what should be accomplished within the study. It also helps them better understand the concepts influencing the research and why this study was conducted. 2
4. Given the general purpose of a literature review for quantitative research you described above in question 3, did the authors do a good job with this? Why or why not? The author gave excellent background information about the study. The author also provided great examples, which helped get the results, but didn't go into depth compared to the researcher. After reviewing the literature review, the researcher did an excellent job and didn't make the reading confusing. The researchers also clarified what the study is and what they want from the study. 5. Describe the methods used in this study. Include which quantitative approach was used (e.g., cross-sectional survey, longitudinal survey, quasi-experimental, experimental), what sampling strategy was used, who the participants were [number, age, gender, race/ethnicity], and how the author(s) operationalized their variables of interest (In other words, what measures did they use to assess which variables [ “The researchers used the Beck Depression Inventory-II to assess depression…” ). Within the study, a questionnaire was used to gather information. Different individuals were given separate questionnaires in different ways. Twenty-five thousand five hundred eleven individuals who grew up with both parents and had been in a romantic relationship in the past six months were in the study. Ages ranged from 18 years old to 79 years old. Different ethnicities were also a part of the study. 6. What kinds of research questions are the methods employed in this study typically used to answer? This question refers to research studies in general ( not this study specifically ); why might a researcher choose this design/approach (the approach you identified in #5)? 3

This method of using questionaires maximize the sample size and answer open-ended questions to gain a better perspective rather than just a yes and no answer . 7. What are the implications of the sampling method on the external validity of the study, meaning does the way they selected their sample and the participants they ended up with compromise to whom the results of the study will apply? The researcher's questionnaire offered a large number of results. The participant in the study was referred to the questionnaire in different ways. The potential issue of individuals deceiving the study is not meeting the criteria and still participating. 8. Are there any threats to internal validity that the researchers did a good job of addressing or that they did not address well, meaning are there alternate explanations that fit the results better than the ones the author(s) provided? Provide support for your response. I didn't notice any threats to validity. Results from the research were done on the computer through a system called IBMSPS Statistics 21 and Statase 14. The researcher didn't specify if the information from the questionnaire is put into the plans, but if so, that can threaten the internal validity because there is room for error. 9. What was the goal of the statistical analysis in this study? Was it to describe frequency and averages, to explore relationships among variables or to test for differences between groups? Provide support for your response. The statistical analysis aims to explore the relationship between specific variables, determining the impact that interparental conflict has on children growing up. The researcher wants to 4
comprehend that not only does the parent's conflict style affect their children, but it also affects the conflict style of the partner they choose to be with. 10. Considering the methods used in this study, including the sampling procedures, operationalization of the variables of interest, and the statistical tests used, did the researchers draw reasonable conclusions based on the results, meaning have their conclusions gone beyond the data they have in hand? The researcher's conclusion in this study is that the child's conflict style mirrors the style of their parents, which plays into the conflict style they see in their romantic relationship . 11. Are there ethical concerns apparent in this study? Provide support for your answering using AAMFT ethical codes and the Belmont study. There are no ethical concerns in this study. The participants were given questionnaires, which the researchers purposefully did. 12. What are the real-world implications of the study findings? Are the results meaningful and important for clinical practice? To whom might these results apply? The results from the study show that adult children learn conflict styles from their parents. This happens through observation. They form their behaviors similar to those they watched their parents exhibit. These results can be applied to the parents and adult children with no children at the moment. These results can help parents to be more cautious about their conflict style and also assist someone in changing their conflict style. 5
