Building a working relationship with a client is the role of a social worker during the engagement process (Gasker, 2019). The conversation and environment between the social worker and client need to be able to open boundaries and provide vulnerability, and acceptance (Gasker, 2019). During the engagement process, important factors such as spirituality, diversity, and culture need to be considered. When working with involuntary clients social workers must have patience and go at a reasonable pace (Gasker, 2019). The engagement process is important and can’t be rushed with any client. Three important skills that are important during the engagement process are eye contact, pointing out strengths, and active listening. Eye contact is important because, in some cultures, direct and indirect eye contact is discomforting (Gasker, 2019). For example, if a worker writes notes the whole time, it might make the client uncomfortable and build barriers. Pointing out strengths is important in the engagement process because it can help clients accept help (Gasker, 2019). An example of pointing out strengths is thanking a client for sharing and coming to seek options for their problem. Active listening demonstrates that the worker is acknowledging the clients’ problems and is trying to understand their situation (Gasker, 2019). Using nonverbal communication is an example of active listening, head nods, eye contact, and nonverbal cues “umm hmm” help the client know that you’re actively listening (Gasker, 2019). Knowing the skills of engagement will help social workers connect, understand, and build relationships. Reference Gasker, J. (2019).  Generalist social work practice . New York, NY: SAGE Publishing.
