The role of the social worker during the engagement process is to create a space to allow the client to come and interact (Gasker, 2019). Three skills that are important during the engagement process include empathy, active listening, and self-reflection. Empathy is an important skill to have because social workers need to meet the client where they are at and attempt to understand the client’s situation from the way the client views it. Active listening is a vital skill as we need to be able to hear what the client is telling us in order to be able to truly understand the situation and utilize the most appropriate techniques. Self- reflection is another essential skill as we must reflect on our own biases, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in order to understand how that can have an impact on our practice. First, the social worker must think about their own characteristics and how it can impact treatment (Gasker, 2019). Second, the social worker can begin the engagement process which is the beginning of a helping relationship and is formed when the therapist listens to the client and displays empathy skills to try to understand the client’s environment from the client’s perspective (Gasker, 2019).   Gasker, J.
