The engagement process in social work is extremely important. Engagement between a social worker and a client is what establishes trust and rapport. Engaging with a client can be difficult sometimes and can even feel a bit awkward. One skill that is important to use during the engagement process is active listening. This is important to follow up or to fully understand the client. Another skill would be good communication. This skill goes hand-in-hand with active listening. When a social worker has clear and concise communication with a client, the client is going to be able to understand all of the information given. Lastly, empathy and emotional intelligence is another great skill to have during the engagement process. Being able to be empathetic towards the client and the issue can help the client feel supported and understood. According to Gasker (2019), empathy begins before the social worker meets the client and it continues throughout the helping process. In my field, I have realized how importance of engaging a client. I work with a very vulnerable population that has gone through a lot of traumas. Engagement is vital, for me to understand the clients and their needs. I have utilized these three skills when I first met with a client and so forward, to building that rapport and connection with them. When I get a new client, I try to actively listen and provide good communication. What this does, is it opens a door for a deeper conversation, in which I can be empathic about what they are going through or the tribulations they have endured in the past.
