Characterize the police personality and how it is expressed. 3. Explain why levels of stress are higher in policing than other occupations, and identify ways police departments can address the high levels of stress exhibited by their officers. 4. Identify and discuss the causes of police suicide and how officer suicide affects an agency. 5. Describe and discuss the occupational dangers to the health and safety of police officers. Explain the police subculture and why it results in the blue wall of silence. Police subculture is a combination of shared “norms, values, goals, career patterns, lifestyles, and occupational structure.” It is characterized by “clannishness, secrecy, and isolation from people who are not a part of the group. Police subculture also shapes the way the officers interact with their communities. Loyalty is an important factor when it comes to police subculture, police officers are able to work together and even protect each other. Police subculture results in the blue wall of silence because police officers protect each other and show loyalty, they work together as a whole which is why they wouldn’t throw their partners under the bus for any misconduct .
